Rio, a Limousin cross British Blue heifer from Penrith-based Neil Slack, Plum Tree House, continued on her winning ways at Penrith Show, last weekend, to win the commercial cattle championship and the inter-breed beef honours.

This 18-month-old heifer by the French AI sire, Rossignol, and shown by Hannah Brown, Leyburn, was baby beef champion at Smithfield, reserve baby champion at liveScot, champion commercial at Northumberland and Cumberland and reserve heifer champion at Beef Expo and the Great Yorkshire.

There was also another big win for Wayne Stead and the Wilson family's Riverdane Ashlyn Gold from Evening Hill, Thursby, Carlisle, which won the Holstein championship and the supreme dairy honours. She is by Chassity Gold Chip and was bought privately in February from Mark and Sue Nutsford. She calved her first in November and has since then secured the heifer championship and inter-breed heifer championship a the Highland and the intermediate heifer title at the Dairy Expo, this year.

Leading a strong show of sheep was Scott Thomason's home-bred Bluefaced Leicester ram lamb from the Piel View flock from Walney Island, Barrow-in-Furness. He is by an H4 Auchry and out of a home-bred ewe sired by F9 Myfyrian.

Scottish exhibitors making their mark included Susan Bryden Broomwell Lochmaben Lockerbie who won the Ryeland section with Broomwell Wallender a shearling ram sired by Broomwell Uther Pendragon. He was also champion at Lesmahagow, the Highland and Cumberland Show.

And, John Thorburn, Holmlea, Eastriggs, who topped the Zwartbles section with the home-bred two-shear ewe, Holmlea Camilla Wicked 3, sired by the homebred ram, Chico. She was also champion at Great Eccleston,
