Supreme sheep was the home-bred North Country Cheviot shearling ram from James Mackay’s 50-ewe Biggins flock from Killimster, Wick, selected by Roderick Runciman, Allanshaws, Galashiels, who found his reserve overall in the Texel champion.

This was a tup lamb from DN Campbell and Sons, Bardnaclavan, Westfield, which was shown by Jonnie Campbell. He is by Knock Yukon and is destined for the breed sale at Lanark, next month.

Second reserve was the overall group champion winners – a home-bred two-crop Texel cross Half-bred ewe with Suffolk cross lambs at foot from William Campbell and sons James and William, Lynegar.

Reserve group was a trio of home-bred North Country Cheviot gimmers from Charlie Angus, Oldfield, Thurso.

North Country Cheviots were also to the fore amongst the pure-bred groups, with John Polson’s trio from Smerlie, Lybster, triumphing over three Texels from John Forbes’ Boultach flock from Latheron.

Champion – D and M Tait, Inkstack, Barrock, near Thurso, with March-2016 born bull Inkstack Eros, by Inkstack Prometheus and out of an Inkstack dam by Rawburn Age. He was on her first outing. Reserve – B and J Mackay, Skitten, by Wick, with three-year-old cow Billinge Magic Jenya Erica, by Netherallan Peter Pershore and out of Mosston Muir Jennifer Erica. Senior bull, cow – B and J Mackay. Junior bull – D and M Tait.

Beef Shorthorn (Judge: M Irvine). Champion – J Campbell and Co, Todholes, Thurso, with Todholes Daisy Kirsty, a half sister to the 2016 champion here. She is by the Stirling purchase, Lowther Godwin, out of Ballylinney Daisy and was placed at the Highland and second at the Stars of the Future. Reserve – L and T Robertson, Inkstack, Barrock, the previously unshown home-bred two-year-old heifer, Pentland Tessa, by Tofts Atlas and out of Pentland Tessa C262. Bull, cow – L and T Robertson. Heifer – J Campbell and Co.

Highland (Judge: M Irvine). Champion – M Coghill, Blingery Farms, Wick, with the sole entry, the two-year-old black bull Cameron Dubh of Kelby, by Conan Dubh of Craigowmill and out of Fiona 2 of Bien Esk. He was bought at Oban in February when he stood champion.

Any other pure breed native (Judge: M Irvine). Champion – DA and Ki Douglas, Achnamoine Farm, Watten, with a four-month-old bull calf bought in utero of Croasdale Cherub which stood reserve champion.

Charolais (Judge: M Irvine). Champion and reserve – J Morris, Olrig Mains, Castletown, Thurso. Supreme was the rising three-year-old cow Olrig Jadore, by Dingle Hoffmeister and out of noted show cow Olrig Dubarry, which stood champion at the Highland in 2010. Reserve was the seven-month-old ET heifer Olrig Minny, bred from the Goldies Dynamite daughter, Blelack Ginny and sired by Blelack Blackberet. All classes – J Morris.

Simmental (Judge: M Irvine). Champion, supreme cattle and overall champion of champions – J and J Gunn, 1, Mavsey, Lybster, with home-bred two-year-old heifer Mavsey Golden Pride, by Banwy T-Rex and out of Mavsey Pride. She stood champion of champions at Latheron and second at the Highland last month. Reserve – J and J Gunn, with the home-bred nine-month-old bull calf, Mavsey Hurricane, by Mavsey Enforcer and out of Mavsey Bedazzle. He was reserve male at Latheron. All classes – J and J Gunn

Continental (Judge: M Irvine). Champion and reserve – JK Manson, Upper Northfields, Hempriggs, Wick, with British Blues. Supreme was the home-bred 21-month-old heifer Caithness Krystal, and ET daughter of Drift Domino, out of Caithness Caladonie. She was reserve senior champion at Stars of the Future. Reserve was Caithness Kennedy, a 21-month-old ET son of Gromit Hof Ter Zilverberg, out of Caithness Caladonie. He was junior male champion at the Highland last year.

Commercial (Judge: C Hendry, Heads of Auchinderran, Keith). Champion – G Begg, Vauldale, Nybster, Auckengill, with the home-bred mid-January born British Blue cross heifer Holy Moly. By Invercharron Diablo, – a bull borrowed from the Munro family at Invercharron – she was overall calf champion at Latheron. She will be sold at the Thainstone Spectacular next month. Reserve – J Munro and Son, Invercharron Farm, Ardgay, Sutherland, with home-bred 10-month-old British Blue cross heifer Hard To Resist. She was first in her class at Latheron and is also destined for the Spectacular next month. Senior heifer, senior steer, heifer born June 1 to September 30, 2016, butcher's animal – J Munro and Son. Clydesdale (Judge: J Henderson, Udale, Dingwall). Champion – JW Taylor, Aikers Farm, Orkney, with the filly, Aikers Lady Charlotte. Reserve – MW and L Munro, Gersa Croft, Newlands of Geise, with the second prize winner to the champion, West Glen Apple Blossom. This three-year-old filly by Collessie Stepping Stone, out of West Glen New Dawn was a bought privately from Jim Anderson and was reserve here last year. Male – I Miller, Quarryside Croft House. Female – JW Taylor.

Highland pony (Judge: Mrs Sally Leslie, Melville, South Cantray, Inverness-shire). Champion and reserve horse – N MacDonald, Bridge Street, Halkirk, with Braehillor King Duncan, the four-year-old gelding by Belivat Muldoanich that was reserve champion here last year. He is out of the Monarch of Millfield-sired Goldie of Whitefield. Reserve – J Macleod, Upper Dounreay, Thurso, with the yeld mare, Briar Rose of Park View. Two or three-year-old – S Campbell and J Taylor, Tayberry, St Margarets Hope, Orkney. Senior gelding – N MacDonald. Yeld mare – J Macleod. Stallion, ridden – A McLennan, Garth, St Ola, Orkney.

Shetland pony (Judge: D Macarthur, Culloden). Champion – Lols Shetland Pony Stud, The Brough, Toab, Orkney, with Hools Janet, a four-year-old yeld mare that stood reserve junior and reserve female at the Highland, last year and breed leader at Orkney Country. She is by Wells Masterclass and out of Merkisayre Poppy. Reserve – E and S Dunnet, Lynfield, Lyth, with Anya of Auckhorn, a yeld mare. Yeld mare – E and S Dunnet. Border Leicester (Judge: K Hourston, Skelbister, Orkney). Champion and reserve – A Miller and Sons, Aimster, Thurso. Supreme was a home-bred three-crop ewe by Didcot Prim, on its first outing with the reserve going to a previously unshown home-bred shearling ram by Ditton Hitman, destined for the ram sales at Quoybrae, in September. Suffolk (Judge: D Summers, Easthouse, Orkney). Champion and reserve – B Swanson, East Murkle, Thurso. Champion was a January-born ewe lamb by Smithston Superman, a ram bought at Stirling, last year, out of a home-bred ewe by Whitecairn RJ. Reserve was a home-bred three-crop ewe that stood second here last year. She is by Whitecairn RJ, a tup bought privately from Rob More, and out of a home-bred ewe. Aged tup – A O’Brien, Skelpick, Bettyhill. Shearling ram – W Barnetson and Sons, Lynegar. Tup lamb, ewe, gimmer, ewe lamb – B Swanson.

Half-bred (Judge: K Hourston, Skelbister, Orkney). Champion – D Miller, Buckies, Thurso, with a ewe lamb by an Aimster Border Leicester ram, out of a bought-in Cheviot ewe. Prime lambs (Judge: A Morton, Lochend, Denny). Champion – J Campbell and Co, Todholes, Thurso, with a pair of April-born Beltex cross wedder lambs by an Overhouse ram bought privately, out of Texel cross ewes by a Cambwell sire. Reserve – H Sutherland, I Drummie Farm Cottage, Golspie, with the second prize pair to the champion, Beltex crosses. Two North Country Cheviot, or Half-bred – H Sutherland, Drummie Farm Cottage, Golspie. Two Suffolk crosses, two continental crosses, two any other native crosses – J Campbell and Co. North Country Cheviot (Judge: J Farquhar, Smiddyquoy, Gillock). Champion and supreme sheep – J and W Mackay, Biggins, Killimster,Wick, with a home-bred shearling ram on his first outing, and destined for the breed sale in September. He is by Smiddyquoy Ram, which was purchased three years ago and out of a home-bred ewe. Reserve – K and R Sutherland, Sinclair Square, Halkirk, with the small farmers and crofters champion, a ewe lamb by Oldfield Showfield, a ram that goes back to home-bred Hilliclay genetics. He was bought last year at Lairg for £5000, is by Balnkeil Smart Lad and was on his first outing since. Reserve – A Campbell, Mill House, Stainland, with a home-bred two-crop ewe by a Longoe sire bought at Lairg, out of a home-bred ewe. Ewe, ewe lamb – A Campbell. Gimmer – J Mackenzie, Langdale. Blackface (Judge: J McLachlan, Campbeltown, Argyll). Champion – S Sutherland, Bardnaheigh, with a gimmer. Reserve – Mr and Mr Elder, Portormin Road, Dunbeath, with a ewe lamb by a home-bred son of the £100,000 Nunnerie Centurian. Ewe, tup lamb – DA and K Douglas, Achnamoine, Watten. Gimmer – S Sutherland. Ewe lamb, tup – Mr and Mrs Elder.

Native sheep (Judge: J McLachlan). Champion – DA and K Douglas, Achnamoine, Watten, with a three-crop Bluefaced Leicester ewe bought at Warick and Caroline Wilson’s dispersal at Dingwall, last year. Reserve – Jan Mackenzie, Langdale, with a South Country Cheviot two-shear ram bought last year from Mount Benger at Lockerbie. He is by a Becks ram and was placed at the Highland. Lleyn (Judge: J McLachlan). Champion and reserve – J Campbell and Co, Todholes, Thurso, with the first and second prize ewes. Both are home-bred two-crop daughters of Inchture Nae Limits. All classes – J Campbell and Co.

Commercial sheep (Judge: K Hourston, Skelbister, Orkney). Champion, inter-breed champion group and second reserve supreme overall – W Barnetson and Sons, Lynegar, with a home-bred two-crop Texel cross ewe by a home-bred sire and with twin March-born Suffolk cross lambs by a home-bred sire at foot. The ewe was champion here last year again with Suffolk cross lambs at foot. Reserve – Messrs Sutherland, Sibmister and Stainland Farms, with the second prize winner to the champion, a home-bred four-crop Texel cross ewe by a home-bred sire and shown with twin, March-born Texel ewe lambs at foot. They were third at the Highland. Cheviot female with Half-bred lambs – D Miller, Buckies, Thurso. Female with lambs at foot – W Barnetson and Sons.

Cross sheep (Judge: A Morton, Lochend, Denny). Champion – W Barnetson and Sons, Lynegar, with a three-quarter-bred Texel gimmer by a home-bred sire. Reserve – Messrs Sutherland, Sibmister and Stainland Farms, with a seven eighths Texel gimmer by a home-bred sire that was first at the Highland this year and last year was part of the winning commercial ewe pair at the Black Isle. Texel MV-acc (Judge: K Sutherland, Sibmister and Stainland Farms). Champion and reserve inter-breed sheep and reserve – DN Campbell and Sons, Bardnaclavan, Westfield. Supreme was a tup lamb by Knock Yukon, a Tophill Wallstreet-sired lamb bought last year at Lanark for 3200gns in partnership with Sibmister and Stainland Farms, out of a home-bred ewe by Didcot United. He is destined for the breed sale at Lanark. Reserve was a ewe lamb bred the exact same way. Ewe, gimmer, aged ram – D and I Angus, Oldfield, Thurso. Texel Non-MV (Judge: E Campbell, Balvaird, Muir of Ord). Champion – J Coghill, Burnside, Huna, Wick, with a home-bred shearling ram by a Lower Reiss ram bought at Caithness, out of a home-bred ewe. He was champion of champions at Canisby Show, last year. Reserve – A and A Gunn, The Shiean, Hill of Forss, with a tup lamb bought in utero of a Breedies gimmer bought at Thainstone, last year, and sired by Mitchellhill Vangal. Ewe – E Simpson, Cairnside, Oldhall. Gimmer, shearling ram – J Coghill. Ewe lamb – W Dunnett, Fairview, Halkirk. Aged ram – K Gunn, Shop Farm, Scotscalder. Tup lamb – A and A Gunn.

Continental (Judge: D Summers, East House, Orkney). Champion and reserve – Yvonne Spence, Gowanbrae, Skye of Curr. Supreme was Benmore Oops A Daisy, a home-bred two-crop ewe that was first here as a ewe lamb and champion the following year. She is by a Welsh sire and out of a home-bred ewe by Rockvilla Golden Promise. She was placed at the Highland, last month. Reserve was Benmore Sambucca, a January-born tup lamb by Banwy Moonshine, out of a home-bred ewe. He was placed at the Highland. All classes – Y Spence.

Supreme was a fine fleece with the reserve presented to a Greyface Mule/lustre-type fleece. Fine fleece, lustre fleece, mountain fleece – DA and K Douglas. Medium fleece – H Sutherland, Drummie Farm Cottage, Golspie. NCC fleece, natural coloured fleece – L Anderson, Plewlands, Duffus, Elgin.
