A BUSY show welcomed a large turnout of spectators to Duns Show, where a one-crop Suffolk ewe from the Taylors, Belmont Farm, Kelso, was crowned supreme overall.

She was picked out by overall champions judge, Miss Doreen Calder, of Marigold Farm, Reston, who found her reserve in a Australorp cockerel, from the Andersons at Whitsome, Duns.

Keith Redpath, of Redpath Farms, Kelso, took the inter-breed cattle championship with his Limousin bull, Dinmore Jollygood.

There was also a long service presentation for Peter Donaldson, who has worked for RM and JF Seed, of Woodend and Cothill Farms, for 40 years. He is also the show’s field foreman, and has been for 30 years.

LEADING awards:

Aberdeen-Angus (Judge: Miss C Orr, Halbeath, Dunfermline). Champion and reserve inter-breed cattle – A Hodge, Rulesmains Farm, Duns, with Rulesmains Karen, a five-year-old cow with calf at foot. She was female champion here last year and is by Rawburn Winston, out of a Canadian ET-bred cow. Reserve – Gordon Brooke Trust, Upper Huntlywood, Gordon, with Linton Gilbertines President, a March, 2016-born bull by Netherallan Peter Pershore, out of Belhaven Polestar. Bull born before January 1 2016, reserve male – Kersquarter Angus, Abbey View, Kelso. Bull, heifer born in 2015 – Gordon Brooke Trust. Cow in milk, heifer, calf, female, reserve female – A Hodge.

Limousin (Judge: G Hamilton, Ramrig Farm, Berwickshire). Champion and inter-breed cattle – K Redpath, Redpath Farms, Kelso, with Dinmore Jollygood, a three-year-old bull bought at Carlisle from Paul Dawes. He is by Wilodge Tonka, out of Dinmore Gaiety and was supreme cattle champion at Kelso. All classes – K Redpath.

Multi-breed (Judge: Miss C Orr). Champion – Gordon Brooke Estate, with a Beef Shorthorn bull, Balgay Jerusalem Song, which was born in May, 2015. He is by Glenisla Zetor, and is out of Balgray Rosewood Romy. Reserve – JH Craggs, Glower-O'er-Him, Sedgefield, Co Durham, with the British Blue, Bens Loveable, a 15-month-old heifer. She is by Littleburn Harry, and is out of Bentybrook Freestyle. Bull – Gordon Brooke Estate. Heifer – JH Craggs.

Cross-bred (Judge: G Hamilton). Champion – JH Craggs' Ginger McMoo, a 16-month-old red Limousin cross heifer. She was purchased at Lanark in October, and was placed third at the LiveScot in the calf classes. She is by Easgillhead Exterminate and out of a Limousin cross cow. All classes – JH Craggs.

Blackface (Judge: T Renwick, Williamhope, Cloverfords, Galashiels). Champion – Professor Penny, Bothwell, Cranshaws, Duns, with a gimmer by a £1000 Fechan. Reserve – Professor Penny, with a shearling by a £1000 Crosswoodhill. Two-shear ram, shearling, ram lamb, ewe, gimmer, ewe lamb, naturally shown ewe, naturally shown ewe lamb – Professor Penny, Bothwell. Naturally shown gimmer – Professor Penny, Craigwinshiel, Cranshaws, Duns.

Suffolk (Judge: N Sandilands, Ruecastle Cottages, Jedburgh). Champion, inter-breed champion, and champion of champions – AW and BT Taylor, Belmont Farm, Kelso, with a one-crop ewe. Reserve – RG Laing and Sons, Oxmuir, Greenlaw, Duns, with a gimmer. MV accredited classes – two-shear ram – A Mackinnon. Ram lamb, ewe, gimmer — RG Laing and Sons. Scotch Mule and Greyface (Judge: T Renwick). Champion – Mrs S Thomson, Cockburn Farm, Duns, with a Greyfaced one-crop ewe. Reserve – Professor Penny, Bothwell, with a Scotch Mule ewe lamb which is home-bred and is to be sold. Ewe – Marigold Farming Co. Gimmer – T Walker. Ewe lamb – Professor Penny, Bothwell.

Bluefaced Leicester (Judge: T Renwick). Champion – A Ainsleigh, Linkshead, Cockburnspath, with a shearling. Reserve – A Ainsleigh with a gimmer. All classes – A Ainsleigh.

Texel (Judge: J Park, Drinkstone, Jedburgh). Champion and inter-breed sheep reserve – F and R Renwick, Legars, Kelso, with a ewe lamb by the 42,000gns Strathbogie Your Tupped, bred from a ewe by a home-bred tup that is a full brother to Castlecairn Keltic Star. She is out of Castlecairn Presentation-sired ewe that was also dam of the £65,000 Vital Spark sold to Cowal and Ettrick. Reserve – F and R Renwick, with a tup lamb which is a full brother to the champion. MV accredited classes – Two-shear ram – F Bell. Shearling – P Penny, Crichness. Ram lamb, ewe, ewe lamb – F and R Renwick. Gimmer – I Murray, East Horton, Wooler. Non-MV accredited classes – Ram – R Whitecross, Clarabad Mill, Paxton, Berwick-upon-Tweed. Reserve – J Royan, Putton Mill, Duns, with a Poll Dorset from the Bennachie Poll Dorsets flock. This was with a home-bred tup lamb, by Ballytaggart Xtra Special, which is out of a home-bred ewe. He is destined for the breed sale at Carlisle. Shearling, ewe lamb – A and P Glennie, Threeburnford, Oxton, Lauder. Ram lamb, gimmer – S Anderson, 51 Earlston Road, Stow, Galashiels. Prime lambs (Judge: K Hedley, Ivy Cottage, Hindhope, Jedburgh). Champion – A and P Glennie, with a pen of two Beltex cross lambs. Reserve – A and P Glennie with a pen of two Beltex cross lambs. All classes – A and P Glennie.

Shetland (Judge: S Meikle, 3 Bowling Green Road, Kirkliston). White champion and overall champion – A Bain, Bogs Holdings, Pencaitland, with the shearling, Greenacre Merlin. He was champion at Haddington and Kelso and is by Greenacre Gregor, out of St Baldred’s Juliet. Coloured champion and reserve overall champion – PD and A Playfair with a gimmer, Kaimsknowe Hyacinth. Home-bred, she has won several tickets this summer. White classes – two-shear ram, shearling, gimmer – A Bain. Ram lamb, ewe, ewe lamb – PD and A Playfair.
