Glorious, albeit sticky sunshine prevailed throughout for Central and West Fife Show, where Thomas Clark and twin sons, William and Thomas, Madderty, secured their second supreme overall championship in three years, with a Clydesdale yearling filly.

Taking all the plaudits this year for the family, who run just two Clydesdale females at Muirton, was the unusually coloured chestnut/blonde Muirton Margo – a half sister to Muirton Mela, their supreme winner here in 2016.

"She's a lovely sweet horse with good bone, legs, hair and frame. She's a great example of the breed," said Marjory Tennant, who stepped in to judge the overall while her husband, Tom was still judging the driving.

For the overall, Margo, a previously unshown yearling filly by the show winning Muirton Sabre, was up against the supreme beef, sheep and dairy winners, which were placed on a points basis by the various inter-breed judges. There was however a tie for reserve overall with the remaining three all scoring equal points which, as a result, saw the animal with the highest points from an individual judge selected second best.

This in turn saw the inter-breed dairy, Witherslack Mincio Joanne, a second calved Holstein by Bertaiola Mincio, and another from the Wilsons, Carskerdo, step into the runner up position. This was the second year in succession the family scooped the top dairy honours at Fife and West Fife, with different animals.

There were more celebrations amongst the beef lines for Gillian Scott too, when her overall champion of champions winner from last year, Drumlone Lindsay, a three-year-old in-calf British Blue heifer, again scooped the inter-breed beef honours, while her three-quarter-bred Limousin cross calf, Doo Da, won the tri-colour amongst the commercial cattle.

Inter-breed beef cattle judge, Finlay Smith, Biggar, found his reserve winner in the Aberdeen Angus leader from Skye breeder, Duncan Rankin, Kilmaluag Eriskay, a January 2017-born bull by Retties JFK, brought out by Richard and Carol Rettie.

British Blues were also to the fore for the inter-breed pairs with a duo of home-bred heifers, Abington Lily and Abington Lottie, from Ian McGarva, Abington, winning the overall ahead of two Aberdeen-Angus heifers from Mr Rankin

David McKerrow and sons David and James, Freuchie, also continued on their winning ways in the sheep section with their inter-breed winner from Fife Show, a home-bred Texel gimmer by Knock Yankee, the choice of the overall sheep judge, John Robertson, Pitlochry.

Just pipped at the post was a home-bred Suffolk gimmer from Stewart Lathangie, Glenrothes, that was breed leader at Fife.
