More than 450 people, dairy breeders and enthusiasts, descended on the Brewster family’s Boclair Holstein unit, just outside Bearsden, Glasgow, for the Holstein UK Premier Herd Open Day.
This noted, show winning herd, which was also crowned winner of the Premier Pedigree Herd in 2017, is run by brothers David and John, and celebrated the day with a stock judging competition, run by Holstein Scotland as a fundraiser for the club.
There were four categories for those taking part in the stock judging, to include under 14, under 26, ladies and open, with entrants required to judge six classes of cattle. A fantastic uptake saw 262 people take part, whilst club member David Gray presided as master judge.
Adam Montgomerie won the under 14 age category, whilst Sophie Lee took first place in the under 26 group. Elaine Butterfield was crowned winner amongst the ladies, and David Booth came out on top in the open category.
The stock judging competition provided an ideal opportunity for the Brewsters to showcase some of their best cows, which are housed all year round and milked through four Lely robots.
At present, 200 cows are milked at Boclair, with an annual rolling average of 13,500litres at 3.67%BF and 3.21%P, with a calving index of 404 days. The family is proud to have more than 150 cows classified VG or EX within the herd.
The Lely robots were installed more than two years ago and have taken the herd to a new level of production, with heifers now giving up to 15,500 litres and some cows exceeding 19,000 litres. The herd is also a prime example of the effective use of sexed semen, with 75-100 surplus heifers sold each year.
