IT was a day to remember for Steph Dick at Perth Show when her Limousin heifer not only secured the inter-breed cattle honours but also went on to claim the champion of champions ticket.

Going all the way for the Young Limousin Breeders' Club chairman was Stephick Mistique, an April, 2016-born heifer that runs alongside the Dick family's Ronick herd at Mains of Throsk, Stirling. She is by the Ronick stock bull, Rathconville Eugene, and stood reserve female as well as reserve supreme at the Great Yorkshire Show.

"She's a wonderful heifer that fills the eye in every way. She's alert and also walks well, simply a great heifer," said Perth Agricultural Society president and former chairman, David Armstrong, from Tibbermore, Perth, who had the honour of judging the supreme.

These were statements backed up by Robert McNee, of Over Finlarg, Tealing, who judged the inter-breed cattle championship and said of his leader: "I liked the length and correctness of her. She's not too extreme but is lovely and feminine, and looks like she'll turn into a good breeding cow."

It was, in fact, a good day for the Ronick stable when a Limousin cross heifer from husband and wife stockman team, Stewart and Lynsey Bett, won the commercial section before landing the reserve inter-breed title thanks to 'handling well and having meat in all the right places', according to Mr McNee. Their Red Hot Diamond, a 16-month-old Sarkley Digital daughter, also did well at the Great Yorkshire where she stood reserve champion.

The Ronick team also won the junior bull inter-breed championship with their reserve limmy champion, Ronick Nissan, a 15-month-old son of the new stock bull, Lynderg James, which edged the lead over the native bull champion, Jack Ramsay's Beef Shorthorn bull called Millerston Lynchpin.

It was a first every inter-breed pairs win for the Highland cattle breed when Jim and Catherine McKechnie's stylish duo caught the eye of Mr McNee. Their breed champion and reserve, Catriona 3 of Cartocharn and Kirsty 2 of Gartocharn, stood ahead of Major Walter's Charolais pair, Balthayock Nesta and Balthayock Nina.

Mr Armstrong was also full of praise for the supreme sheep champion, a one-crop Texel ewe from Robert Cockburn, Errol, which was on its first outing since being bought at last year's Select Seven sale from the Knock flock for 9000gns.

"She's a true champion being very correct with great length and is very correct on her legs with a sparky head, and I liked that she was fit rather than fat," said the sheep inter-breed judge, Roderick 'Rocket' Runciman, from Allanshaws, of the Ettrick U Cracker daughter.

The Scottish Farmer:

Reserve to her in the sheep lines was the inter-breed champion from last year, Robert Bryce's three-crop Suffolk ewe which had already scooped the breed titles at Doune and Dunblane, Stirling and Drymen show, where she went on to stand reserve inter-breed winner at the latter.

Sticking with the sheep section and a Blue Texel duo from John and Emma Lyle, their champion Millend Yeeha and a home-bred ewe, won the inter-breed pairs championship. In reserve was the Cheviot pair, a home-bred shearling tup and ewe from Ian and Mhairi Davidson.

There was more to celebrate for Robert Cockburn when his south-type Blackface champion, a home-bred shearling tup by a £12,000 Crossflatt, won the supreme Blackie championship ahead of the northie champion, a tup lamb from David Baillie.

Also forward for the supreme judging was the overall heavy horse champion, Jo Jack's Highland pony mare, Katrina of Strathmore, which she is producing for breeder, Charlie McQuattie, this year. The eight-year-old Strathmore Clova daughter stood reserve in-hand Highland at Fife Show while, under saddle, was novice ridden champion at the NPS Spring Show as well as open M and M Ridden champion at Braco.

The Scottish Farmer:

"She's a lovely stamp of a Highland pony with a nice line from top to tail and she moved well too. In a Highland pony I look for a good walk and the mare tracked up really well," said supreme horse judge, Mrs Audrey Barron, from West Newton, Arbroath, who awarded the reserve rosette to Charlotte Young's Clydesdale champion, Collessie Flash Girl.

This two-year-old filly by Arradoul Balvenie was champion at Stranraer last year and first in her class at Biggar earlier this season.

The final of four beasts in contention for the champion of champions accolade was the goat champion, the Campbell family's Capitol Artemis, a two-year-old British goat that was adding to her tri-colour tickets at Border Union and Doune and Dunblane.
