A BUSTLING sheep section at Kinross produced the show’s supreme champion in the shape of a Texel gimmer from David McKerrow, of Nochnary, Freuchie – the same sheep that was interbreed champion at Kinross last year as a ewe lamb.

By Knock Yankee out of a ewe by Ettrick You’re A Winner, she has since been interbreed champion at Fife and champion at West Fife.

The sheep overall reserve had also a successful history with Kinross, as the Malones of Cardenden’s Bluefaced shearling tup, by Kirkbay Redgate Jackpot, had won here last year as a lamb.

But much of the sheep spotlight at the show was on the Ryeland breed, congregated en masse at the RSPB Loch Leven site for their national competition. That was jointly topped by Susan Bryden’s aged ram, Broomwell Wallander, and Thomas Dods’ coloured section gimmer Pepper, who were pointedly not faced off to produce a breed supreme.

Over in the cattle, Stuart and Lindsay Bett’s Perth show reserve interbreed champion, Red Hot Diamond, took the interbreed award. This 16-month-old heifer, by Limousin bull Sarkley Digital out of a Limousin cross British Blue cow, was also champion at Drymen and Gargunnock.

Pushed into cattle reserve was the Perth champion of champions, Stephick Mistique, from Ronald and Stephanie Dick, of Mains of Throsk, Stirling. This April 2016-born Limousin heifer by the Ronick stock bull, Rathconville Eugene, out of Ronick Voici, also stood reserve female as well as reserve supreme at the Great Yorkshire Show.
