A four-year-old mare from Ronnie Black's Collessie stud, Ladybank, Cupar, Fife, lifted the Clydesdale tri-colour at the 162nd National Stallion Show at Morris Equestrian Centre, Fenwick, last weekend.

The event which saw a good turnout of all the native heavy horse breeds, was led by Collessie Alanna, shown fresh after her win earlier in the week, at the Royal Northern Spring Show. She was top pick for judges David Young, Finmont (females) George Young, Arradoul (males) and Bruce Ferguson, Perth (geldings).

A daughter of Roughlands Jasmine and Arradoul Balvenie, Alanna has collected several awards in her career including champion at the Grampian Foal Show and reserve overall at the Society Winter Fair at the end of last year.

Winning the prestigious Cawdor Cup for the male champion, and taking the reserve overall was Jim and Louise Greenhill's yearling colt Tulloes Sensation, from Forfar. The April-born entry is out of Tulloes Lady Jane and sired by Arradoul Balvenie – a former Cawdor Cup winner back in 2012. Full sister to the 2022 Scottish World Show champion Tulloes Alanna, Sensation has also had great show success with previous wins at North of Fife Foal Show and foal champion at Forfar Foal Show.

For the second year on the trot, Manor Danny Boy from Jean and Terry Pleavin-Edge, took the champion gelding title. Now five-years old, this lad is sired by Carnaff Ambassador and out of Manor Bonnie Lass. Judge Bruce Ferguson described him as an 'upstanding gelding with weight, size and in good order.'

Reserve female champion was William Mitchell's two-year old filly Ainville Cindy Doll. She is a daughter of Cawdor Cup stallion, Doura Magic Touch and is out of Ainville Lulu. Her most recent win saw her lift the senior championship at Perth Foal Show and Kilpatrick Foal Show.

Bandirran Sir Jamie from Ron Brewster and Helen Carr, made his show debut and went on to take the reserve male honours and runner up for the Cawdor Cup. This four-year old stallion is sired by Freedom Majestic Dreamliner and out of Kypehall Mistina.

A good entry of Highland ponies was topped by Bowmore Isla Lady from Jacqueline Bonar and daughter Mirren Hay, Lanarkshire. The nine-year-old mare was the pick of the in-hand and ridden judge, Jennifer Allan from Fife. Sired by Moss-side Iain Mor and out of Lesley of Whitefield this mare won the novice ridden title here last year and was also placed first in the in-hand class at last year’s Royal Highland Show.

Reserve went to Anne Mitchell with her home-bred four-year old mare Dunedin Floraidh Dubh that stood second in her class at Blair Horse Trials last year. She is by Glenbanchor Macgille Dubh and out of Dunedin Finale.

Overall champion Shetland was Claire Connor's imported stallion Jorenzo V.D Veldhoveve, a nine-year-old that has been in the UK for 15 days in which time he has collected two championships including overall supreme at Arc Winter Champs Series. Imported from the Netherlands, his pedigree features Caz V.Stal Nieuwemoed and the mare Piadora v.d. Veldhoeve.

Abbotsrule Snowdrop was reserve from chairman John Watson, Jedburgh. This home-bred yearling filly picked up multiple first prizes as a foal and is sired by Achramore Bravado, out of Heidrum Av Berhli.

Alichbrae Cassius, a 10-year-old stallion from Stevie and Kirsty McKay, was overall champion amongst the miniature Shetlands. Breed leader at Braco Show, last year, he is sired by Kerswell Montgomery and out of North Wells Candle.

Lisa Wilson and Matthew Davidson took the reserve honours with their 12-year-old stallion Lignit Chickadee, a son of Kerswell Basil Brush out of Rowan Berry’s Cascade. Chickadee won his class at the 2019 Great Yorkshire Show in the first year the organisation had classes for the section.
