A TOTAL of 169 breeding cattle sold through Aberdeen and Northern Marts, last week, where an in-calf Simmental cross heifer from Lower Cushieston, Meikle Wartle, topped the trade at £1750. 
In-calf cows hit £1680 for a Limousin cross from Earlsfield, Kennethmont, while females with calves sold to £1480 twice for Limousins from Whitehouse, Lumphanan.

A few days later, a good show of 1171 store cattle, saw averages improve on the week as 713 bullocks levelled at 242.8p (+5.3p) with 447 heifers at 232.6p (+0.9p). 
The sale reached 298.7p for a 308kg Charolais bullock from Inverlochy, Tomintoul, with bullocks also hitting £1440 for a 596kg Limousin from Jacks Croft, Kingswells. 
Limousins topped the heifer section at 276.6p for an entry weighing 470kg from Guise of Tough, Tough, as well as £1390 for a 616kg pair from Corse of Kinnoir, Huntly. 
Eight young bulls reached 234.9p for a 332kg Limousin from Mellanbrae, Inverurie, and £1280 for 668kg Charolais from Inverlochy, Tomintoul.
Of the Orkney and Shetland cattle, Charolais crosses from Braebuster, Deerness, topped at 272.5p for a pen of six heifers weighing 400kg as well as 264.4p for a 418kg bullock. Per head, a 650kg British Blue heifer from Cleat, St Ola, topped at £1280 with a 562kg Limousin bullock from Netherskaill, Birsay, selling for £1270. 
The firm also sold 3088 sheep of all classes, where two-year-old Mules from Westside, Forglen, led the trade of the 184 grit ewes at £140. 
Store hoggs (1608) met a strong demand to peak at  £110 for Texels from Westside with the 14 ewe hoggs to £95 for Texels from Easter Aquhollie, Rickarton. The 301 island hoggs reached £76 for Cheviots from Schusan, South Ronaldsay. 
Feeding ewes and rams (981) sold to £137.50 for pure Suffolk rams from Mid Mains of Balfour, Fettercairn, with ewes to £130 for pure Texels from West Ciarnhill, Calsalmond.

Carlisle
STORE cattle maintained recent high rates despite the slight decline in the finished cattle trade when Harrison and Hetherington sold 428 to a top of £1345 last week. 
That was paid for a Limousin cross heifer from W McKie, Laurence Holme, Wigton, with bullocks to £1300 for a Simmental cross from KH and RJ Crayston, Sheepfields, Seascale. 
Weanlings (292) sold to £1040 for Salers heifers from Ochrelands, with bulls to £1020 for Limousins from Kirkburn and bullocks to £960 for the same from Bayle Hill.
On Monday, some 347 store hoggs met a cracking trade, topping at £76.50 for a Texel from Messrs Todd, Southernby Hall.

UNITED Auctions sold 1344 store cattle and young bulls, at their weekly sale, where Charolais crosses topped the price per kg at 289p for a 358kg bullock from Halfmark, with heifers to 273.5p for one weighing 309kg from Gateside. 
Bullocks (844) also reached £1380 for a 690kg Aberdeen-Angus cross from Westerton and averaged 239.42p, while the 43 black and white bullocks averaged 150.01p having hit 154.3p and £855 from Holehouse. 
Heifers also sold to £1300 for a 571kg Simmental cross from Forneth and averaged 217.35p for 453. 
Young bulls (15) sold to 235.6p and £1250 for Limousin crosses from Crosshouse and Berryhill, respectively, and averaged 199.95p. 
Among the cast cows, beef types sold to 207.9p for a Limousin cross from Balcaskie as well as £1550 for a Simmental from Dalachy and a Limousin from Woodhead of Mailer. 
The 158 beef cows averaged 140.83p while 22 dairy cows averaged 104.19p and sold to 118.6p from Nyadd and £995 from Norrieston. 
A Limousin from Ballinloan topped the cast bulls at 201p and £1640. 
Also on offer were 2417 store and breeding sheep, where in-lamb Texel ewes from Wester Clunie topped the breeders at £120, and store hoggs hit £80 for Texels from Lochelbank.

IT was a good day for Messrs Grieve, of The Lee, at Harrison and Hetherington’s sale, when they secured the top ticket in the heifer class at a pre-sale show before their Limousin cross led the sale at 271.2p per kg. 
Heifers also sold to £1090 for Limousins from Craiglea and averaged 211.02p. 
Bullocks hit a top of £1370 for Aberdeen-Angus from Outerston as well as 258.1p for Limousins from The Lee, and averaged 223.77p. 
The company also sold 452 store and breeding sheep, where breeders peaked at £104 for Suffolk crosses and Cheviot Mule ewes, all of mixed ages from Over Howden. 
Store hoggs met a strong trade for a mixed end of season show, peaking at £75.50 for Texels from Elliston.

Levelling at 219.4p, 156 heifers sold to 259.2p for a trio of 382kg Charolais crosses from West Watten (Thomson) as well as £1270 for a 624kg Charolais from Dunn Farm, Watten. 
A British Blue cross cow with bull calf from Upper Northfield, Wick, topped the six breeding cattle at £1180. 
Prime hoggs (120) sold to 211.2p and £87 for Cheviots weighing 41.3kg from Wester Loch, Wick, while the 303 store hoggs met an excellent demand and sold to £103 for continentals from 31 Larel, Halkirk.

Darlington
A FAST trade prevailed at Darlington Farmers’ Mart’s sale of 260 store cattle, where a British Blue bullock from Dennis Easton, Low Ewecote, topped the trade at £1300. 
Bulls reached £1110 for a pen of five Charolais crosses from E Parsons, Newstead, Little Stainton, with heifers to £1070 for a Limousin from EW Holmes, Hetherick Grange, Marwood. 
The entry of 110 cast and OTM cattle levelled at 146p and met the best trade in recent memory. Topping at 194p was a Limousin cow from TW Clark and Son, Frankland Park, Durham City, with a pure British Blonde from P Weightman and Sons, Hallfield, Easington, topping the gross trade at £1605. 
Also on offer were 987 sheep, which included the annual entry of in-lamb females (123) which peaked at £380 for an empty Texel ewe hogg from the Stones Family, Nun Cote Nook, Marrick, who also sold in-lamb pure Texel gimmers to a top of £260. 
Mule ewes from J Hart’s dispersal from Five Mile Bank sold well, peaking at £155 for two-crop ewes scanned at 200%. 
Store hoggs (864) showed no signs of letting up, regularly passing £90 and hitting a top of £108 for a single from SJ Love, Low Doctor Pasture, Wolsingham.

A QUALITY entry of hoggs for the time of year met the dearest trade so far at C and D Auction Marts’ sale of 2510 store hoggs and feeding sheep. 
The sale peaked at £106 and £104 for Texels from Mosshouses, with other breeds to £87 for Beltex from Nether Albie and Townfoot. 
Hill breeds sold to £73 for North Countr Cheviots from Marwhirn, with ewes to £85 from Townfoot. 
Also forward was a show of in-lamb ewes, where both Texel and Greyface ewes from Kirkandrews topped at £130.
A small entry of store cattle peaked at £1270 for a Limousin heifer from JW Thomlinson and Son, Standingstone Rigg, while bullocks hit £1090 from JF and SJ Macdonald, Ladyhousesteads.

SELLING through Wallets Marts on Monday were 193 store cattle, where bullocks averaged 228.12p per kg or £876.51 per head, and heifers averaged 211.89p or £753.44. 
British Blues from T Robb, Trolane, Dalry, topped the gross trade at £1375 for a bull and £1105 for a heifer, while cattle from L Templeton, Ardachie, Kirkcowan, led the price per kg when a pen of Aberdeen-Angus cross bullocks realised 264.2p and a pen of Limousin crosses made 253.6p. 
Averaging 125.84p and £766.49, OTM cattle sold to 175p for a Hereford from Messrs Asbery, Hill of Balmaghie, and £1123.22 for a Simmental from Messrs Lindsay, Culnaightrie.
