Elite pedigree dairy cattle peaked at 6300gns at the annual Spotlight sale at Sedgemoor Auction Centre, on Tuesday, which attracted breeders and enthusiasts from all corners of the UK and Ireland.

The event, which is now in its fifth year, was topped by the show calf, Churchvale Solomon Rachel, a seven-month-old heifer from Richard Thomas and family, Carmarthen. This stylish youngster is by Walnutlaw Solomon and bred from a home-bred VG88-2yr Sid daughter out of Willsbro G Jordan Rachel Ex94-3E SP, which in turn traces back to Rockset Faber Rachel. Maternal sister to the 2500gns Churchvale Fitz Rachel sold here last year, she was knocked down to Randolph Miller and son Brian, buying for their Moorshard herd.

The same buyers also went to 3600gns for Hefyn Wilson and family’s Callen show calf from the Tregibby herd from Cardigan. Selling at this price was Tregibby Callen Marie, a five-month-old by OCD 1stClass Callen, bred from Starlet Solomon Maria VG88-2yr, a show cow that stood reserve intermediate champion at this year’s Celtic Dairy Show.

John and Mary Hill, Cole Hill Farm, Devon, consigned four heifers from the Ladys-Manor S family, which sold to 3700gns to Tom Reed of Gatcombe, Lancs

Flying the flag for Scotland, Auchensale Diamondback Rox 2, from Auchensala Genetics, Ruthwell, Dumfries, made 3100gns to selling to R Morse, Carmarthen. This 10-month-old by Mr D Apple Diamondback, is bred from Lilyhall Mahogany Rox Red VG88 and a grand-daughter of the Ex90 LP60 cow, Tegan Advert Mahogany Rox Red 2.

And, Jonny Lochhead’s Kedar Brown Swiss consignment from the same area peaked at 2750gns for Kedar Blooming Jamaica, a 26-month-old heifer sold served to sexed Norwin, to Smith Farms, Essex. She is by Scherma Glenn Blooming and bred from Inspired S Jasmin VG89.
