BEST quality and heavy prime lambs were dearer on the week at Lawrie and Symington’s sale of 1076 at Lanark, on Monday, which included a show and sale of Texel prime lambs on behalf of the Scottish Texel Club.

Taking the championship, as judged by Stuart Stark, from Alton, Kilsyth, was a trio bred from Texel ewes from Messrs Hamilton, Gilmeadowland. They tipped the scales at 43kg and sold to Mr Stuart for £100 per head or the top price per kg of 232.5p.

Mr Stuart also bought the reserve trio, this time a 39kg pen from Messrs Gilchrist, Newmill, for £80 as the 32 pens of show lambs cashed in to average 196p which compared to an overall average of 182p (SQQ 183p).

Leading the gross trade at £103 apiece was a pen of Texels from Messrs Reid, Bengal Farm.

The 888 cast ewes were dearer on the week, peaking at £140 for Texels from Keith.

Also forward was an entry of prime cattle which reached 258p for a 536kg Limousin heifer from David Dickinson, Brockwoodlees, as the sale of butchers’ cattle averaged 248.8p.
