Scottish breeders made their presence felt at Paul Braithwaite's dispersal of the North Yorkshire-based Albion Beef Shorthorn herd at Longtown Auction Mart, on Monday, buying several of the lead priced lots including the sale leader at 8000gns.

Selling at this price was Albion Rosebud Jihan, a Democrat of Upsall-sired heifer with January-born roan heifer calf at foot. She is out of the Tarrant Arnie daughter, Albion Rosebud Evelyn, and changed hands due to Glenbrae Grant. A well known show winner at events in the north of England, she was bought by Perthshire breeder, Lady Nairn, Balnabroich, Blairgowrie, who bought four other females to include the first prize winner at the Great Yorkshire, Albion Jilt Jadazia, another by Democrat of Upsall, with bull calf at foot, for 4800gns. Other purchases included Albion Maryann Jacinta, also by Democrat and her calf Albion Maryann Freya, by Tarrant Arnie, at 4200gns, with a cow and calf acquired at 3500gns.

Barclay and Lucy Mair, Kinnermit, Turriff, purchased the top priced cow and calf at 5200gns. This was Albion Jilt Emelia, a seven-year-old roan by Tarrant Arnie out of the Tugby Titan-sired Hinstock Wychelm. She sold with heifer calf at foot by Democrat and due to Glenbrae Grant.

The first animal in the ring, Albion Tanzy Karrisa, an in-calf heifer also by Democrat of Upsall, but out of the Uppermill Lomand daughter, Bankfoot Dixie, got the sale off to a great start, selling for 7200gns. A prize winner at this year's Great Yorkshire she headed home with A and C Farms, Oakland, Rutland, who also went to the same money for Albion Rosebud Kuljeet, another in-calf heifer by Democrat, but out of Albion Rosebud Gloredhel and Albion Rosebud Kasarna, also by Democrat, at 6800gns.

Other top prices included 3400gns to Messrs Watson, Ballyfirth, Granton on Spey; 3400gns to Messrs Marshall, Eastlands, Crocketford and 3000gns each to Tim Riley, Stoneyroyd, Hebden Bridge and Messrs Hunter, Woodlands Hall, Consett.

Top price from the collective sale was 2300gns paid for Pikelowe Gold Girl, a cow with calf at foot, from Andrew Thompson, Chorley, purchased by Messrs Clayton, Accrington.

Overall, the catalogued entry of 84 cows and heifers with 40 calves at foot averaged £2143 per head with the dispersal averaging £3465.
