Purchasers travelled from far and wide for the dispersal of the Bell family's Hensol Holstein herd, following the sale of the farm from Mossdale, Castle Douglas.

The sale, staged at Borderway Mart, Carlisle, last week, saw trade peak at £1700 for a fourth calver by Picston Shottle. She calved in July and sold to W Risk, Stirling, giving just shy of 50kg of milk.

The same buyer went to £1600 for a young cow in her second lactation.

Second top price was £1650 paid for a Gen-I-Beq Sammy daughter milking in her second lactation and due again in January. She was purchased by Harper Adams College in Shropshire, who also went to £1500 on two occasions for a second calver by Ked Outside Jeeves and a calved heifer by De-Su BKM Mccutchen.

Messrs Bowe from Penrith purchased a number of high yielding cows topping at £1520 for a daughter of Comestar Lobster. This milky cow was producing close to 50kgs in her third lactation having calved in July.
