A roan bull topped the Beef Shorthorn Society's annual autumn sale in Worcester, selling for 2650gns.

The entry, Warmington Lawrence, a 17-month-old son of the 8000gns Carrarock Chalkie from R Leach, Banbury, Oxfordshire, was knocked down to Messrs Barnett, Hereford.

The same breeder sold the lead heifer at 2600gns to CW Dover and Sons, Twigworth, Gloucestershire. Warmington Broadhooks, a similarly aged roan, is also by by Chalkie.

Next at 2300gns was Podehole Gypsy Harem, a four-year-old red and little white by the 10,000gns Chapelton Clansman. She sold in calf to Knockenjig Hercules and with her six-month-old heifer, Podehole Gypsy Mystique by Hercules. Bred by Harry Horrell, Peterborough, the pair sold to RAA Pinfield Bromsgrove, Worcestershire.

Mr Horrell enjoyed a good day's trading with another lot at 2150gns and two at 2000gns. Dearest was Podehole Gypsy Frieda VG88 purchased by DI and M Wootton, Newton Abbot, Devon. This six-year-old roan Chieftain of Upsall daughter sold in calf to Klondyke of Upsall, and with her six-month-old bull, Podehole Marshal, by Hercules.

First to make 2000gns was Podehole Phantasy Euphoria VG87, a seven-year-old roan Trojan of Craigeassie daughter that sold with her six-month-old bull, Podehole Monarch by Hercules. The pair was purchased by Emily Wood, Hawkhurst, Kent.

The second 2000gns bid went to Podehole Madeline Jasmine VG86, a three-year-old red by the 10,500gns Millerston Fine Ideal, in calf to Knockenjig Hercules. The buyer was LD Robson, Rugby, Warwickshire.

Selling at 2250gns was GH and Megan Towers' Greenley Lolita Floss, an 18-month-old red and little white heifer by Glenisla Explorer from Welford, Northamptonshire, purchased by J Nelson, Larne, County Antrim.

A second 2150gns call was made by Tom Angell, Bishops Castle, Shropshire for the three-year-old red and white Sandley Jezebel, a Lintonpriory Dollar daughter from Evans and Price, Llanilar, Ceredigion. She sold with her five-month-old heifer, Llwynhywel Melanie by Glenisla Jacobite.

Averages: Four cows and calves £2257.50; eight in-calf cows £1-519.87; 10 maiden heifers £1544.55; three bulls £2187.50.
