HACKNEY Download, a substitute entry, from Paul and Christine Tippetts, proved the star attraction at the Beltex Society's second show and sale at Carlisle, securing both the overall championship award and the top price of 3500gns.

The ram lamb from Shifnal, Shropshire, is by Willy Nine Hundred, bred from Hackney What a Girl, a Scooby Doo, daughter and sold to Matthew Burleigh who owns the Matts flock based at Enniskillen, Co Fermanagh, Northern Ireland.

Rosie Boden's second prize ram lamb, Mellor Vale Dictator ET, a Clary Cosmos son out of Luggsmill Priscilla, by Luggsmill Milos, also hit the headlines, selling for 1800gns to Messrs Thornley, Swadlincote, Derbyshire.

Miss Boden's flock from Mellor, Stockport also received 1000gns from Jonathan Watson, Berwick Upon Tweed, for Mellor Vale Drake, also by Clary Cosmos.

Second top price amongst the males was 3400gns paid for Aberdeenshire breeder, Stuart Wood's first prize shearling ram and reserve overall champion, Woodies Chitchat ET, purchased by Caroline Roots, Kilnford Croft, Dumfries. This blue tup from Woolhillock Croft, Skene, is by Todhall Sumo, a ram that has bred sons to 8000gns and 6000gns, and out of an imported ewe.

Next best amongst the shearlings at 1200gns was Bruce and Colin Mair's Aviemore Casinova ET, a son of Loandhu Bruno, out of Aviemore Red Patch. The buyers were Messrs Richardson, Cockermouth.

And at 1000gns, Irish breeders, Wade and Alison McCrabbe, Raphoe, Co Donegal, sold Ardstewart Chauffer, a Muirton Arrowstar son to Messrs Garnett and Son, Skipton, North Yorkshire.

The adult dispersal of Donald Douglas' Beechcross flock from North Kessock, Inverness, topped the females with sales at 3100gns, 1800gns and 1600gns.

Dearest was a triplet-born gimmer by Bharangyne World Record bred from Beechross Star, a Kinchyle Pistol Pete daughter, purchased by Perthshire-based breeder Iain Reid, buying for his Osprey flock from Methven.

Yorkshire breeders, Messrs Timm, Appleton Roebuck, bought the next three Beechcross females at 1800gns, 1600gns and 1300gns.

First on his list was the two-year-old Beechcross Bunty, a Morton Agent 007 daughter out of Beechcross Noreen.

Beechcross Alison, a three-year-old by Kinchyle Pistol Pete then made 1600gns while Beechcross Bianca, another two-year-old this time by Bharangyne World Record realised 1300gns, both to Messrs Timm.

Topping the collective sale of females at 1500gns was the second prize gimmer from J and S Wilkinson, Langlands, Richmond, North Yorkshire, purchased by Messrs Wilkinson, Wigton. This was Langlands Crumple, a Langlands Bruiser-sired entry bred from Langlands Ample.
