THE sole bull to sell headed up Harrison and Hetherington's sale of Beef Shorthorns at Carlisle when the very first lot in the ring, George Turton's Kramer of Upsall, went under the hammer at 2700gns.

The 30-month-old road is by the carcass improver Glengloy Frigate, and bred from a Wallace of Upsall daughter from the Clipper family, one of the better families in the herd at Upsall Grange, Thirsk, managed by George and Moreen McCulloch. He sold to the Ballaseyr Stud, on the Isle of Man.

Females peaked at 1650gns for the dearest from the dispersal of Helen Ashton's Lawns herd from Orrell, Wigan. Selling to Messrs Smith, Laurencekirk, Kincardineshire, for that price was Laws Frigate, a 2012-born Chapelton Wildfire daughter that sold scanned in calf to Stoneroyd Electric Storm having already produced five calves.

Messrs MacDougall, Kilmacolm, Renfrewshire, paid 1500gns for five-year-old Lawns Gertrude, a Lawns Fine Fellow daughter which changed hands due with her third to the Electric Storm bull.

The main sale of females reached 1600gns when Messrs Smith, Laurencekirk, paid that for Cutthorn Amber's Lady, a 17-month-old from AJ Gibson Farming, Burnopfield, Newcastle. Sired by Cutthorn Investor, she is out of a Westmoor Editor-bred cow from the Amber family.

At 1500gns was Tom and Kate Madden's February, 2016-born Watchman of Upsall daughter, Ballyvaddy Tessa, from the Ballymena-based herd. Selling to Messrs Falkingham, Goole, East Yorkshire, and scanned in calf to Bryon of Ballyvaddy, she is out of a Chapelton Winsome daughter.
