HUGH Dunlop, Holehouse, Mauchline, claimed the supreme championship with a six-month-old Charolais-cross bullock, before it went on to sell for £1200, at a show and sale of suckled calves at Craig Wilson, Ayr.

This sale is an opportunity for Ayrshire young farmers to purchase a suckled calf, which is then reared by them until May, when it is shown at the Ayrshire Association of Young Farmers Clubs annual county rally.

Tapped out by judge, Iain Lammie, of Longhouse, this calf is by Doonvalley Harry, a home-bred bull by Lower Ffydd Benhur, and is out of a Limousin-cross cow. He sold to Miss Alice Allan, of Ayr Young Farmers Club.

Tipping the scales at 335kg, Mr Dunlop reckons this was his first time as champion at this sale.

In reserve was a 320kg March-born black Limousin bullock, from David Parker, of Auchenairney, Kirkmichael, and it went on to sell for £1450 to David Bryson, 1 Grassmillees Way, Mauchline. This calf is by Lodge Hamlet and is out of a home-bred British Blue-cross dam. This was Mr Parker's first time as reserve champion at this sale.

Top price of the day went to the Young family, Tormitchell Farms, Girvan, with a Limousin heifer, and she sold for £1600 to the McHarg family of Crofthead, Ochiltree.

Reserve top price was £1500, and that was achieved by the Meikle family, of Dykehole, East Kilbride, with their 295kg Limousin heifer. She sold to the Hamiltons of Mid Shawtonhill Farm, Strathaven.
