WITH a top price of 12,000gns paid for the breed’s champion, Beef Shorthorn bulls met a satisfactory trade at Stirling, on Monday, when the 15 sold cashed in at £4487, a drop of £634 on the year, but for two more sold.
While bulls produced a 75% clearance, a good show of females resulted in the heifers levelling at £2426 for 48, back £464 on last year’s sale for the same number.
Breed president, Sally Horrell, said that the sale of both bulls and females followed the national trend. “Breeders will be reasonably happy with today’s trade considering the tricky summer weather we’ve just had and the uncertainties surrounding Brexit.
“Although the average is back on the year, it’s still evident that the bull trade is driven by commercial producers looking for the premium prices paid for Shorthorn-sired cattle and for those looking for an ultimate suckler cow.”
It was a particularly good day for the Roddick, Laurie and Thomson team, and their stockman, John Dick, when it secured its first ever championship win at Stirling and secured a personal best of 12,000gns.
This was with Shawhill Leroy, a 19-month-old roan son of Shawhill Henderson – a home-bred bull by Shawhill Freedom retained in the 30-cow herd. The first calf bred from the Glenisla Zetor-sired, Shawhill Dewdrop Jasmine, Leroy stood champion at the Agri-Expo and Stars of the Future Calf shows, last year. Second in his class at the Great Yorkshire this year, as well as breed champion at Dumfries, he sold to pedigree breeder, Duncan Welsh, for his West Broad herd, at Fenwick, Ayrshire
Following on at 6000gns was Meonhill Leader, from Sid and Mary Chaplin’s 25-strong cow herd at Little West End Farm, Chidden, Hampshire. Brought out by husband and wife duo, John and Mary Reynolds, this January, 2017-born red and white polled twin is by Elliot Danny Boy, a bull which bred this year’s junior female champion at the Great Yorkshire. Bred out of Meonhill Waterloo Ziva, a daughter of Chapelton Winsome, this lad stood junior champion at the Royal Norfolk and reserve inter-breed champion. He heads to work with JP Gray, Unthank Farm, Whittingham, Northumberland.

Females
A cracking trade for the Shorthorn females saw prices peak at 5000gns for the second prize intermediate heifer from the late Gordon Brooke Estate’s herd at Upper Huntlywood, Earlston, which is managed by John Elliot jnr, Roxburgh Mains, Kelso.
Brought out by stockman, Iain Campbell, was the April, 2017-born, Gordon Millicent, a roan heifer by the 13,000gns Chapelton Braveheart, a bull which stood champion at Stirling Bull Sales in 2013. Bred from the Holmeere Alastair daughter, Holmeere Millicent, this heifer’s maternal sister Lintonpriory Millicent, stood inter-breed native champion at Stars of the Future, last year. Forking out the cash was Messrs Evans and Price, Llwhnywel, Llanilar, Aberystwhyth, Ceredigion.

Draft females from Major Gibb’s Glenisla herd, Blairgowrie, Perth, also proved popular, with a top price of 4800gns paid for Glenisla Foxglove Flake when sold to Walker of Netherwood, East Cottage, Netherwood, Bannock. By Chapelton Glen Clova, this March, 2017-born heifer is bred from a previous Glenisla Foxglove Flake, by Holmeere George.
Two came under the hammer at 4600gns from Northern Ireland breeder, Duncan McDowell, who runs his well-known Castlemount herd at Newtownards, Co Down. First at that price was the female champion, Castlemount Matrix Margo, a 17-month-old daughter of Elliot Matrix – a bull bought privately in 2014 which has bred sons to 13,000gns and daughters to 7500gns for the female champion here in 2016, as well as the lead price of 6600gns in February, 2017. Bred from Castlemount Matrix Margo, she sold to T and J Linton, Sornfallow, Wiston.

Two females hit 3800gns including the third prize senior heifer, Knockenjig Tessa from David and Rosemary Dickie’s herd at Sanquhar, Dumfries-shire. By Glengloy Geronimo, out of a Meonhill Charlie Chaplin dam, this 18-month-old sold to I Tennant, Hyndford Road, Lanark, having run with both Meonside Gangster and Fearn Jumpstart prior to the sale. The same home also received 3000gns from R Brown, Causewayend Farm, Fintray, for Knockenjig Duchess, an April, 2017-born heifer by Glenisla Explorer.
Matching that price was Major Gibb’s Glenisla Waterloo Naomi, an 18-month-old heifer by Chapelton Glen Clova, out of a Fearn Whyvis dam. She was snapped up by JM Hay and Son, Meikle Tullo, Edzell.
