A SOLE Brown Swiss heifer proved the star attraction at Harrison and Hetherington's Pedigree Dairy Day at Carlisle, last week, selling for the top price of 3100gns.

Lillyhall Bosephus Southern Comfort from Matthew and Ruth Harper of the Lamroda and Lillyhall pedigree herds based at Dearham, Maryport, is a great grand-daughter of the famous Old Mill Snickerdoodle – an eight time winner at the World Dairy Expo. Sired by Jobo Wonder Bosephus and bred from the VG88 Inspired Jongleur Schnappy, this March 2016-born heifer sold due soon to Blooming sexed to Matt and Dan Weaver, Stone, Staffordshire.

The event included the October Border and Lakeland show and sale which saw no fewer than 26 sell at or above the £2000 bracket to average £1857 with a 100% clearance, while the much anticipated Espland sale of youngstock sale peaked at 1250gns to average £1011.

Next top price was 2800gns paid on two occasions for black and whites, with the first paid for D and A Cannon's Espland Montery Sue, from Espland Hill, Brampton. A View-Home Monterey daughter bred from an Excellent-classified Cedarwal Spirte dam with high butterfat and protein, she was purchased by Messrs Wilson, Barrhead, Glasgow.

Espland also produced the pre-sale champion in the shape of Espland Zelgadis Betsy, a Zegladis-sired heifer and a grand-daughter of the Ex94 Espland Jordan Betsy 4. Final bidders at 2100gns were Messrs Paul and Son, Johnstonebridge, Dumfriesshire.

The second heifer at 2800gns was the first place junior heifer in milk consigned by HS Petch and Sons, Whitegate, Cleveland in Yorkshire. Their Aytonian Glory 382 was sired by Ladys-Manor Grafeeti and bred from six generations of Ext or VG cows all with big lifetime yields. She headed north with Messrs Brewster, Thornhill, Stirlingshire.

The same buyers also went to 2700gns for Paul Harrison's Chishillways Uno Roma, from East Heddon, Northumberland. She is by Numero Uno and was bred from an Ex94 Colvermist Augusta third dam.

Top price for the Brewster's Boclair herd from Glasgow, was 2300gns paid by Messrs Bargh, Penrith, for Boclair Senator Elegance 7, a Boclair Senator-sired heifer, bred from Boclair Seagual Elegance.

The reserve champion, Robert Steel's Kepculloch Camelot Laurie, from Balfron, shown by his daughter Jane, is by Larcrest Camelot and sold freshly calved at 2000gns to Bridgehouse Farming, Newton Stewart.
