A mother and daughter duo from the Shannon family combined to make the top price of 5450gns at the first part of Robert and Hilda Clare's pedigree Hawksmoor Holstein herd from Adderley, Market Drayton.

The sale, staged at Beeston Castle Auction, met a cracking trade with some 50 lots selling for 2000gns or more.

Top individual price was 4100gns paid for Hawksmoor Shannon 21, a VG86-2yr classified daughter of McCutchen and the seventh generation of cows in the top two grades. Calved in July and still giving 32.6 kg having been recently served

to Mincio, she was purchased by Jason Booth of Northern Ireland.

Following her through the ring, her three-month-old daughter by Lineman, made 1350gns selling to Messrs Cope Prees of Whitchurch, to give a combined sale of 5450gns.

The second top seller at 4000gns was the VG89-3yr Hawksmoor Topee 92, a second calver by Alexander that was reserve overall champion at Nantwich and champion Holstein and reserve inter-breed at Anglesey Show this year. She also sold to Messrs Booth of Northern Ireland.

Not far behind at 3400gns, Hawksmoor Seamist 36 VG87-3yr, a second calver by the Mel son, Hawksmoor Barnaby, was purchased by Ken Marshall, Carmarthen. She calved in July and was still giving 37kg.

Staffordshire breeder, AG Bonsall, Slindon, forked out 3200gns for Hawksmoor Rene 47 Ex92, a sixth successive Excellent-classified cow from the Rene family. Sired by the Sanchez son Hawksmoor Donzal this fresh fourth calver was yielding 47.6 kg, and had two sisters that later sold for 3000gns and 2700gns.

The former, Hawksmoor Rene 50 VG88-3yr a Regancrest MacBedford daughter, sold dry carrying her third calf to Mogul, to Seaton Farms of Audlem.

The same price 3000gns was also paid for the sixth generation VG/Ex Hawksmoor Dora 66 VG86-3yr which sold fresh in her second. She was sired by Nethanvale Mel and sold to TH Flower and Sons, Buxton.

Second top price amongst the calves was 1300gns paid for Hawksmoor Topee 101, a June-born daughter of Numero Uno out of the second top priced lot, Hawksmoor Topee 92. She was purchased by A Mawhinney, Northern Ireland.

Averages: 114 cows and milking heifers £2189.07 (including 54 heifer calves at £619.31).
