A QUALITY offering of 713 calves was forward at Harrison and Hetherington's annual show and sale of spring born calves at Middleton in Teesdale, where bullocks averaged £823.76 (-£56.09) and heifers levelled at £798.24 (-£49.31).

With most calves presented in excellent bloom, quality, well-grown calves met a very strong demand from start to finish, however smaller calves and those lacking bloom met a very selective enquiry.

Judge, Mark Harryman, Swainsea Burn, awarded the championship to a black Limousin cross heifer by Keskadale Cyclone, out of a home-bred cow from JC and J White, Rigg Farm, Lunedale. She later sold for £2600.

The reserve champion, a red Limousin cross bullock from DJ Mallom, Pallet Cragg Farm, Eggleston, Co Durham, made £1450, while the pens of three or more classes, judged by Louise Todd and Paul Hodgson, awarded the best pen of bullocks to Rigg Farm, for £1060.

Outwith the show, a top price of £3000 was paid for a black Limousin cross heifer by Wilodge Inchbyinch, out of a cow bred at Stanhope Gate from Tom and Kay Hutchinson, Bail Hill, Forest-In-Teesdale.
