Scottish beef producers made their presence felt either as vendors or purchasers at Harrison and Hetherington's show and sale of breeding cattle at Kirkby Stephen, which saw trade peak at £3600.

Selling at this price was a British Blue heifer with Limousin cross heifer calf at foot from John McAlister, Wester Thomaston, Bonnybridge. Second in its class at the pre-sale show, this outfit was purchased by Messrs Dobson, White Kirkley, Frosterley.

The 10 beef breeding outfits from Wester Thomaston averaged £2728.58.

First time consignor, Craig Malone, Pitcairn, Cardenden, produced the champion winner – judged by Kay Watson – with a similarly bred outfit. It later sold for £3500 to Gary Bell, Lockerbie, with the four beef units from Pitcairn averaging £3083.34.

A British Blue cross heifer also topped the in-calf section at £3200. This was paid for an entry from Messrs Bradley, Penny Grange, purchased by Messrs Hill, Whitewall, Great Asby. The consignment of 24 continental cross in-calf heifers from Penny Grange, averaged £2308.33.

A mixed trade saw 104 heifers with calves average £2170.72 (+£38.63 on the year), while 43 cows and calves cashed in at£1502.86 and 126 in-calf heifers levelled at £1788.57 (-£120.95). The 30 in-calf cows averaged £1175.10
