Supreme champion at Harrison and Hetherington's Christmas show and sale at Carlisle, was a 632kg red Limousin bullock from Bridgehouse Farming, Newton Stewart, that went on to top the sale at £1896 or 300p per kg selling to the judge, Steven Wilson.

Reserve was a British Blue heifer from Messrs Dent, Elm House, Appleby, that scaled 569kg and made 239.5p or £1362.76 to Messrs Mulholland, The Butchers Great Orton.

Outwith the show, top price was £1631.55 paid for a Limousin cross bullock from Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg Farm, purchased by Pioneer Foods.

Leading the entry of 107 prime bulls at £1709 was a Limousin from Messrs Priestley, Cracrop, purchased by Messrs Kirkpatrick, Lockerbie, while top per kg at 238.5p was a British Blue cross from Messrs Rogerson, Maison Gill, bought by Bowland Foods, Preston.

The massive entry of 598 cast cows, bulls, and prime cattle and 1598 prime sheep, forward for the mart's Christmas show, saw the cow trade topped by a 985kg Limousin from Messrs Illingworth, Howgillside, at 187.5p per kg or £1846 per head paid by Charles Kirkpatrick.

A pure British Blue from Messrs Hartley, Pendle Valley, also made 187.5p selling to Mr Kirkpatrick. It scaled 931kg.

An improved show of black and white cows saw trade improve 5p on the week, with a 718kg Swedish Red from Messrs Fisher, Geltside Farm, leading this section at £1044. Top per kg was159.5p for a Montbeliarde, from the same home.

Over in the sheep ring, pre-sale judge, Jimmy Mulholland of Mulhollands Butchers, Great Orton, found his champion winners in a pen of four in Beltex lambs from T Holmes, Nutholm Farm, which he later bought for £200 per head or 465.1pper kg.

The reserve, the second prize pen to the champion winners, were Beltex from Robert Garth and Sarah Priestley, Peaks View. Their pen sold at £145, £329.5p again to the judge.

Peaks View also topped the section at £550 or 964.9p per kg when a single 57kg Beltex lamb from the couple sold to Mr Mulholland who purchased 13 lambs in total. A previous show winner, it stood second in its class at the Agri Expo, last month.

The sale average was 181.96p with an SQQ of 195.07 which equates to £82.50 a head.

Cast ewes and rams were also a flyer selling to £131.50 for a pair of Beltex from MW Shirvington, Woodbank Farm.
