A QUALITY show of locally bred cattle was forward at C and D Auctions Marts' annual Christmas show and sale of primestock at Dumfries, where the pre-sale champion went on to top the trade.

The show of prime cattle was judged by Granville Moor, who tapped out a black Limousin heifer weighing 550kg from J and L Craik, Waterside, as champion. She later sold for the top price of 390p per kg to R Johnstone and Sons Butchers, Annan.

Taking the reserve honours was a Limousin bullock scaling 620kg from Rena Paterson, Low Three Mark, which made 290p to Frasers Butchers, Stranraer, while the Ross family from Romesbeoch, stood champion in the Galloway section before selling the bullock for 270p to Creetown butcher, William Lindsay.

In the prime lambs, judge W MacTaggart, awarded the championship to the first prize pen of Texels weighing 47kg from T Neill, Upper Tinwald. They later sold for £110 to R Johnstone and Sons.

Outwith the show, the 1372 prime lambs met a dearer trade, with lighter types meeting the most competition. They sold to £116 for Beltex from Maulscastle, while 978 cast ewes met a competitive trade having sold to £105.50 for Texels from Thorns.
