A STRONG show of 32 cast cows and prime cattle were forward for the Christmas primestock show and sale at C and D Auction Marts' Longtown centre, where judge, Jimmy Robertson from the Scottish Borders, had the task of placing the classes.

He picked out a Limousin heifer weighing 570kg from AE Fawkes and Son, Welton Farm, as champion, before it sold for 255p per kg or £1435 to Border Meats, Lockerbie. The reserve honours went to the first prize native-bred Blue Grey bullock from WG and HM Kyle, Spoutbank, which made 202p to Mr Robertson.

An improved entry of cast cows met a sound trade, with a top price of 159p and £1327 paid for the first prize cow, a British Blue from A Roskell and Partners, Laveryhay, Wamphray.

The show and sale of prime lambs attracted an entry of 4196 head, which included 45 pens of ten lambs judged by regular buyer, James Gittins, Welshpool. His champion pen, the first prize Beltex lambs weighing 43kg from R Lines, Killocraw, Bellochantuy, Campbeltown, made £138 per life to West Scottish Lamb.
