A polled bull from Terrence Pye's Rigel herd from Middleton in Leven, Yarm, was crowned Salers champion at the Stirling Bull sales.
Rigel Lancer Poll, an August 2016-born bull which first lifted the senior championship, is one of the first sons sold by the Sagitaire son, Rigel Officer – a bull owned Mr Pye's brother, Malcolm now based at Rednock House, Port of Menteith, Stirling, out of Rigel Jolene, a daughter of the nine-year-old bull, Rigel Byron.
The judge, George McDougal, Bassendean, found his reserve in the junior champion, Cumbrian Moonraker from brothers, Tom and Ian Walling, Over Whitlaw, Selkirk. This June 2017-born entry is by Lataster Hector, a bull bought privately at the NI Beef Expo that bred the 10,000gns Cumbrian Capermellow and is still going strong as a 'teenager'. His dam is Cumbrian Ladybird, a former champion winner at the Highland Show.
Cumbrian genetics were behind the intermediate champion from Colin McClymont, Cuil, Palnure, when Cuil Leyland, a November 2016-born bull was tapped forward. He is by Cumbrian Jonnie, a former champion winner here that has bred sons to 8000gns and 7800gns. His dam is Cuil Delila by the French sire, Blazer.
