A Limousin heifer from AF Thomson and Son, Lammermuir, Athelstaneford, secured the overall championship and top price of £1380 at Caledonian Marts' March show and sale of 478 store cattle, at Stirling, on Monday.

The judge, Stephen Taylor, Bannockburn, found his first prize bullock in another Limousin, this time from A and M MacGregor, Rosehall, Stirling, that later sold for £1030.

Rosehall also bagged the award for the best pen of four bullocks with Limousins that went on to sell for £950 per head while a pen of four Charolais from R McNee, Woodend, Armadale, led the heifers and sold for £960.

Outwith the show cattle, bullocks sold to 261p per kg for Limousins from A Dunn, Redhall, Gargunnock, and to £1350 for more of the same from J Dunn and Co, Martnaham Mains, Dalrymple. They averaged 213p.

Heifers averaged 203p having sold to 244p again for Limousins from Redhall and £1380 for the champion from Lammerview.

Bulls sold to 241p and £880 for Limousins from Keirsbeath Farms, Mains of Beath, Crossgates.

Also forward were 368 store hoggs and breeding sheep, which sold to £140 for Mule gimmers scanned for twins from W and MF More, Castle Rednock. Hoggs peaked at £80 from A Dunn, Redhall and R Clowes, Newhall for Suffolks and Texels.
