A flying trade for quality-bred outfits at Harrison and Hetherington's beef breeding sale of 529 lots at Carlisle, was again led by Fife-based farmers, Craig and Katreen Malone, Pitcairn, who sold the top priced lot at £7000.

The couple, who also produced the lead average selling six units at £3650, sold their best, a black Limousin cross heifer bred with Limousin cross calf at foot to Gary Bell, Haas Side, Lockerbie. The heifer was bred at Monzie and bought at Stirling, while the heifer calf is another by the AI sire, Lodge Hamlet.

In all, no fewer than 164 lots changed hands at £2000 or more with next two top sellers consigned by Messrs Harryman, Swainsea Barn, who sold nine outfits to average £2744. Dearest at £3800 was a Limousin cross heifer with bull calf, with a British Blue cow and heifer calf from the same home making £3700.

A cracking run of 36 outfits from Messrs Stevenson and Sons, Lower Langshaw, sold to a top of £3400 for a British Blue cross heifer with bull calf, to average £2322.

Bulling heifers (43) met a steadier trade selling to £2700 for a British Blue cross from Messrs, Hall, Ainstable Hall, to average £1427.
