A strong trade was seen at Harrison and Hetherington's weekly sale of 1044 cattle where stores peaked at £1260 for a Limousin cross bullock from J Weal and Son, Birkshawhead, Kirkpatrick Fleming.

Heifers sold to £1230 for a British Blue heifer from Messrs Potter, Cardew House, Dalston.

Weaned cattle sold to £990 for a Longhorn bullock from Simon Dalton, Greenside Cottage.

A smaller show of breeding sheep on Monday, was topped at £111 per life, for 10 Texel hoggs with lambs from J Browell and Sons, Quarry House Farm, Hexham. Mule hoggs sold well and to £64 per life for 10 from M Ridsdale and Son, Yew Tree Farm, Penrith.

Heifers were topped at 282.50p per kg for a 246kg Simmental cross from South Mains, and to £1300 for a 736kg Aberdeen Angus cross from Blackburn.

Bullocks peaked at 271.10p for a 284kg Charolais cross from Little Spot and to £1230 for a 533kg Aberdeen Angus cross from Lamberton.

Black and White bullocks levelled out to 173.54p having sold to 199.0p for a 382kg Montbeliarde cross from Meikle Camoquhill and to £810 for a 435kg entry of the same breed from the same home.

The sale, which included store cattle and ewes and lambs, saw an Aberdeen Angus cross bullock from Tushielaw, top the store trade at £1140, while top pence per kg was 362.2p paid for Limousin cross bullocks from Berryhill.

Thainstone

A steady trade for all classes of stock prevailed at Aberdeen and Northern Marts' sale of 549 store cattle, five young calves and 1755 lambs where bullocks sold to 277p per kg for a 296kg Clarolais cross from Pittenkerrie, Glassel and £1500 for a 804kg Aberdeen Angus cross from How Farms, Sanday, to average 219.2p.

Simmentals lead the way in the heifers peaking at 276p from Mains of Pronie, Tarland and £1280 from North Fornet, Skene, to level out at 211.8p.

Also staged the same day was the sale of 215 adult breeding cattle and seven bulls which attracted a large ringside of buyers resulting and buoyant demand with a top price of £3250 paid for a Limousin cow with spring-born bull calf from Mains of Drumdollo, while bulls sold to £5000 for a Simmental from Littlehill of Knaven.

Top price amongst the sheep was £106 for Mule ewe hoggs from Backmuir, Keith whilst ewes with lambs sold to £69 for Texels with triplets from Bogiefeulach, Tornaveen. Texels from Burn of Pheppie, Muchalls topped the rams at £145.

A strong trade was seen throughout at Dingwall and Highland Marts' sale of 123 store cattle, breeding cattle and 746 sheep, where Charolais led the pence per kg section amongst the bullocks selling at 295.8p per kg for Moy Farm, Banavie, while Limousin crosses from Balmaglaster, Spean Bridge, realised £980.

Heifers peaked at 263.6p for a 330kg Limousin cross from Keil Farm, Ardgour and £910 for a 440kg Simmental cross from Balmacaan Farm, Drumnadrochit.

Overall, bullocks and heifers averaged 215.6p and 194.3p respectively, whilst breeding cattle sold £1240 for a Simmental cross cow with a Limousin calf from Arderry, Strontian.

Leading the sheep trade at £134 from Balmaglaster were Suffolk cross ewes with the same breed cross lambs.

Caledonian Marts had forward 304 store cattle at their fortnightly sale, on Monday, where bullocks topped the trade at 256p for Charolais from Gilmour Farms, New Peninver, Campbeltown, and £1110 for a Limousin from D McKenzie, Ardgate, Gartocharn, to average 210p per kg.

Heifers averaged 201p having sold to 239p for Charolais, from Gilmour Farms and to £1100 for Limousins from J and D Telfer, Bougang, Ballantrae.

Black and whites sold to 148p from J McLean and Son, Kilmaho, Campbeltown and to £610 from G Aitken, Wester Whitefield, Dunfermline.

Also forward were 779 hoggs and ewes with lambs where a top price of £198 was paid to M and J Kennedy, Lurgan, Aberfeldy for Beltex cross ewes with twin lamb.

Some 301 store cattle and 28 breeding cattle were sold at Lawrie and Symington's fortnightly sale where bullocks averaged 223.2p whilst heifers levelled out at 207.7p.

Bullocks led the way peaking at £1295 for a Limousin cross from W Laidler, West Handaxwood, and 272.6p per kg for the same cross from RM Johnstone, Boghouse.

Heifers sold to £1220 for a Charolais cross from W Laidler, West Handaxwood, and to 227.5p for a Limousin cross from TW Hamilton, Kirkton of Crawford.

Dairy bullocks were topped at £890 for a Friesian bullock from W and G Lawson, Parklea, to average 147.16p.
