Carlisle

Just under 1000 cattle were forward comprising of 698 store cattle, un-entered store bulls and 292 calves at Harrison and Hetherington's weekly sale, where prices peaked at £1285 for Charolais cross bullocks from LE Grice and Son, Newtown Farm, Carlisle.

Heifers sold to £1090 for an Aberdeen-Angus from Messrs Haston and Son, Swordwellrigg, Annan and the weaned cattle section was led by a Limousin bull at £1190 from Messrs Cowx, Hudscales.

The strong show of breeding cattle two days later, was led by an entry from Messrs Brown, Claughton Hall Farm. Their Limousin cross heifer and calf topped the trade at £3200.

United Auctions held their weekly sale of 332 store cattle, 96 cast cows and 164 breeding cattle where all sections met a buoyant trade with bullocks averaging 206.82p while heifers levelled at 192.72p.

Bullocks sold to 239.60p for a 359kg Aberdeen-Angus cross from South Milton, and to £1280 for a 716kg of the same breed from Castlehill. Charolais crosses led the heifers at 221.20p from Woodneuk, and £1180 from Balbie.

A strong trade was seen throughout at Hope's Auctioneers sale of calves and stirks, where the sale was topped at £500 twice for a British Blue heifer and bull both from Messrs Hetherington.

Amongst the calves, Messrs Jefferson, High Pow, led the way with a Limousin bull that made £350 while heifers peaked at £325 for a British Blue from the same home.

Heifers peaked at £1300 for a Charolais from L Allan and 227.9p for the same breed from Creagraineach, Arran, to level at 188.2p .

Friesian bullocks sold to £740 and 139.9p for a pen of 10 from Helentongate.

Heifers peaked at 228.3p for a South Devon cross from Braeside and £1060 for Limousin crosses from Gilkhorn, Maud, to level at 197p.

Bulls sold to 235.3p for a 374kg Limousin cross from Drumforber, Laurencekirk and £1080 for a 570kg of the same breed from Mill of Knockenbaird, Insch.

Hexham and Northern Marts held their weekly store cattle sale with 95 forward, selling to a top of £1230 by an Aberdeen-Angus cross steer from RM Johnston, High Fotherley, while heifers sold to £1000 for a Charolais cross from Rare Dean.

Also forward were 45 gimmers and ewe hoggs with lambs where Messrs Rochester and Murray, Glebe Farm sold Mule gimmers with twin Suffolk cross lambs at £200.

The cast ewes also met a buoyant demand with the sale topping at £115 for Texel ewes from AG and D Bissett, Middle Dukesfield.
