Southdowns from Jonathan Long's Chaileybrook flock from Herefordshire, led the breed society sale at Worcester securing the top two prices at 900gns and 720gns.

The event, which also saw a sale of Oxford Downs, was topped by a February 2018-born ram by the imported Percheron show sire, out of a home-bred ewe by the former French-bred stock ram, Sarkozy. Backed by a show winning pedigree, with both parents being multiple breed champions, this tup had been champion at Tenbury the previous weekend and having won three of the four classes at the pre-sale show, was knocked down to Jessica Middleditch for her Wakes Hall flock, Norfolk.

His full ET brother and the flock's unbeaten show gimmer, another shearling, secured the third top price amongst the males selling to Megan Chilcott, of the Huntspill flock, Somerset.

Another shearling ram by the same sire made 720gns for Mr Long, selling to the judge, Steve Smith and his wife Helen, buying for their Pen Parc flock from Welshpool. First in his class at the pre-sale show, he is bred from a Golden Valley ewe.

Top price amongst the females was 700gns paid for a gimmer from the Chichester, West Sussex-based, Goodwood flock. She is by Southern Cross, out of a dam by East Dean and sold to Keith Manning, Cissbury, West Sussex.

Just behind, on 600gns, Kathryn Wheeler, Herefordshire, bought a South Down ewe lamb from the same flock.

Oxford Downs sold the same day, were topped at 700gns by a ram from Ceredigion-based Roland Williams’ Greenlands flock.

Sale leader was a Greenlands Class Act son out of a dam by Barley Park Monsieur Chabal, purchased by Pembrokeshire breeder, JWS Brown, buying for his Redhouse flock.

Mr Brown recouped some of his outlay taking 550gns for a ram lamb by Barley Park Ulysses, purchased by Henry Bishop and Emily South, Fencott, Oxfordshire.
