AVERAGES improved by just short of £4 per head and for more sold at Dingwall and Highland Mart's first store lamb sale of the season at Dingwall where some 8082 lambs sold to a top of £98 for Suffolks from 91/92 Achvaich, Dornoch.

By the end of the day, 8082 lambs averaged £58.93, up £3.93 per head on the 3393 sold at the same sale in 2018 that levelled at £55.

Breed averages saw 1098 Beltex level at £58.22 having sold to £77 from Lower Geanies, Fearn; 2301 Texels sold to £84 from Auchmore, Muir of Ord to average £58.86; Charollais peaked at £69.50 from Guidebest, Latheron, with the 600 balancing out at £59.07; Suffolks (3013) £60.54 with a top of £98 from 91/92 Achvaich, Dornoch; Mules (350) £55.55, to £61.50 from Milton Farm, Aberarder; Bleu Du Maines (55), £72.85 to £81 from Rhifail Farms and the 611 Cheviots sold to £65 from Rowanbarn, Plockton, to level at £54.77. The 54 other breeds averaged £55.60 having sold to £63.50 from Lower Geanies.

Broughton

Harrison and Hetherington's opening sale of store lambs at Broughton, attracted an entry of 400 sheep and saw a pleasing trade throughout.

The sale was topped at £73 for a pen of Beltex cross lambs from IW Barrow and Sons, Jackson Ground.

Suffolk lambs sold to £58 for a pen from RD Holland & Co, Low Scales, Millom.

Stirling (UA)

Averages mostly improved on the week at United Auctions's sale of 5040 store lambs and feeding sheep where a top price of £70 was paid for Beltex from Tulchan Croft.

Beltex crosses averaged £65.41 (+£1.41p) on the week; Cheviots, £52.18 (-£3.15); Mules £54.37 (+£0.28p); Suffolk crosses £65.58 (+£3.03p); Texel crosses £63.47 (+£2.09p) and Blackies cashed in at £38.63 (-£1.78p).

Stirling (Cale)

More than 2000 store lambs and feeding ewes were forward for Caledonian Marts' second sale of the season, which saw a sharper trade on the week.

A feature of the sale was a consignment of 401 lambs from J and J MacInnes, Culbhuirg, Isle of Iona, which topped the sale at £73 for a pen of Suffolks, and averaged £61.60 (+£1 on the year).

Carlisle

A smaller number of store lambs forward following the recent bad weather, met a similar trade to the previous week at Harrison and Hetherington's weekly sale on Monday, where a top price of £70.50 was achieved for a pen of Texels lambs from Messrs Elliott, Skelgill House, Alston.

Lairg

Wedder lambs sold above expectations, while ewe lambs met a much more selective demand at United Auctions' sale of 13,118 store lambs at Lairg, on Tuesday, where 9644 wedder lambs levelled at £52.07 (+£0.96 on the year) while 3474 ewe lambs cashed in at £59.51 (-£17.03).

Top price was £130 paid for a hill North Country Cheviot ewe lamb from Dunbeath Farms, Dunbeath.

Wedder lambs sold to £70 for Suffolks crosses from Achosnich, Dornoch. Beltex crosses peaked at £67 from Achentoul Cottage, Kinbrace; park-type North Country Cheviots sold to £66.50 from South Balkeith, Tain, while hill-type Cheviots hit a top of £65.50 from Cartomie, East Amat.
