A packed ringside of buyers from all parts of the UK ensured a buoyant demand for the Holgate family's Aliann Holstein production sale which attracted a lead price of 13,000gns.

Awarded Master Breeder status by Holstein UK earlier in the year, the on-farm production sale at Hard Head Farm, Rathmell, Settle, drew buyers from all four UK countries, with several leaving with empty trailers.

Topping the trade was the reigning All-Britain four-year-old, Aliann Mincio Kitty Ex94-2 SP. A Bertaiola Mincio daughter, bred from the Ex95-5 SP LP80 cow, Aliann Minister Kitty, this show cow, sold in a two-way partnership to David and Claire Jones buying for their Wiltor herd in Wales and Nick Sercombe of the Shambles herd.

Also heading home to the Wiltor herd was the second top priced lot at 7800gns. This was Aliann Mario Peggy VG87-2yr, a Quality Doorman Mario-sired calved heifer, that sold served with her second to All.Nure Secretariat. She is out of the Ex92-2 SP cow, Aliann Saloon Peggy and sold having produced 5066kg in her first 166 days.

A further six lots sold at 5000gns or more with the Graham Kirkby, going to 7000gns on behalf of a client for Aliann Atwood Caramel VG88. A grand-daughter of the 13,000gns Willsbro Mill Caramel, bought at the Willsbro sale in 2011, she is by Maple-Downs-IGW Atwood and sold due this month to Ri-Val-Re Ranger Red.

Elwyn and Cheryl Thomas who own the Gatrog herd in South Wales, bought several lots to include the red calved heifer, Aliann Attico Redrose Red VG87-2yr. Bred from seven successive generations of Ex-classified cows, she is out of the Ex90-2 SP LP60 cow, Willsbro Secure Redrose Red and by Gen-I-Beq Attico Red. She sold served to Mr Stone-Front Reeve-Red.

The couple also went to 5000gns for her maternal sister, Aliann Acme Redrose Red Ex92-2 SP, by KHW Elm-Park Acme. This fourth calver also changed hands served to Mr Stone-Front.

Another red from Blackrose family made 5000 guineas.

Mr Sercombe of the Shambles herd was back in action to buy the Ex90 Aliann Atwood Roxette, in partnership with RJ and SJ Kirk fo the Leedham herd from Leicester, at 6000gns. Another by Atwood but out of the Ex91-2 classified Aliann Bluesky Roxette, she sold due next month to Progenesis Dumbledore.

Heading up to Ayrshire at 5500gns, M and J Montgomerie, Kilmaurs, bought the No 1 entry in the catalogue, Aliann Dreamer August VG85-2yr. A Wiltor Dreamer daughter, bred from the VG85 SP Aliann Braxton August, she sold carrying her second to All-Nure Secretariat.

Also in the money, S Forshaw and Sons of the Longshaw herd went to 5000gns for Aliann Goodwhone Elegance VG87, by TW Goodwhone and bred from the Ex94-3 SP LP70 cow, Skyhigh Drm Elegance.

The Wilsons from Carskerdo, Cupar, went to 3600gns for Aliann Mogul Miss Lolli GP83-2yr, a three-year-old bred from the Ex91-3 Aliann Outbound Miss Lolli, that sold due with her second to Lirr Drew Dempsey.

Averages: 90 cows and calved heifers (incl 10 calves @ £950.25), £ 2843-17; 10 served heifers, £2118-75; eight recently served and maiden heifers, £1214.06. Overall, 109 lots, ££2644.74.
