Penrith

Texels led the way at Penrith and District Farmers Marts' sale of 200 breeding sheep, where a shearling ram from Messrs Winter Bros, Clickham Farm, sold for the top price of £1200.

Early breeding ewes peaked at £108 for a pen of 20 from JB and LM Benson, Galloway Lodge.

A buoyant demand was met at Harrison and Hetherington's weekly sale where trade peaked at £172 for a pen of 10 Texel cross gimmers from Messrs Hill, Clea Hall.

Lanark

Some 4140 Scotch Mule ewes, gimmers and ewe lambs along with Texel and Continental breeding sheep, were forward for Lawrie and Symington's annual sale which saw a strong trade throughout.

The 787 ewes averaged £70.51, while 1212 Mule gimmers levelled at £130.47 and 862 Mule ewe lambs balanced out at £91.18. Some 512 Texel gimmers averaged £125.54.

The pre-sale show of Scotch Mules, judged by J Linton, Sornfallow, saw the championship presented to a pen of gimmers from J Paterson, East Dykes, Strathaven, which went on to realise £155 per head, selling to the judge. The reserve winners, from Messrs McKenzie, Ardgate, later sold for £136, to Glenalmond Estates.

Champion honours amongst the ewe lambs were presented to J and A Galloway, Lochlyoch, whose pen sold for £132 to Stobo Home Farm, whilst the reserve from The firm of Shawhead, Newmains Home Farm, Douglas, made £102 again selling to the judge.

Outwith the show of Scotch Mules, prices peaked at £162 per head twice for entries from I Minto, Townhead and F Smith, Cloverhill.

Mr Minto also topped the Texel gimmers at £172.
