The first Dairy Day sale of the autumn season kicked off in style at Borderway Mart, Carlisle, with some 237 head changing hands at Harrison and Hetherington's monthly event.

Trade peaked at £2200 for a British Friesian heifer from the Neill family from Thornington. She is a daughter of Whinnow Quantum, which was bred by the Blamire family from Wigton, and sold to Messrs Steel, Buchlyvie.

Another heifer from R and A Slack, Cockley Bank, was chapped down to Messrs Powley, Great Strickland, Penrith, for £2150. She is a daughter of ABS Grazie, and having calved in August is now producing 30kg per day.

Richard Livingstone, Kirtlevale, sold the next best at £2080 to Messrs Forrest, Annan. The two-year-old calved heifer, Kirtlevale Hurricane Flora, is by Wiltor Hurricane and bred from Kirtlevale Goldmire Flora, which is VG85 classified.

Just behind at £2050 was a heifer producing 36kg from Balcurvie Holsteins from Fife which again went home with Messrs Forrest, Annan.

The Davidsons from Halmyre, Castle Douglas, sold three Ayrshire heifers to average almost £1900 from a top price of £2020 for a heifer giving 31kg which sold down to Penrith with Messrs Powley.

Just behind, on £2000, Harhill Flip Barb from Richard Harrington, Birds Hill was purchased by Messrs Bentley, Thrisk, North Yorkshire. She is a daughter of Colin Flip and bred from the 60-ton dam, Harhill Mr Sam Barb.

At the same price was a heifer from J McMiken, Ernespie, Castle Douglas selling to Messrs Haston, Dearham, Maryport, Cumbria. Ernespie Primrose is giving 31kg, and is sired by Wintersell Milo, out of Ernespie Primrose 32.
