Fort William

More than 1600 head of store sheep of all classes were sold at Fort William where the entry of 1426 lambs sold to £57 for a pen of Cheviots, from Glengarsk, Arisaig.

Ewes (202) peaked at £45, for a pen of Cheviots, from Traigh Farm, Arisaig, whilst feeding sheep (13) reached £67 for a cross-bred ram, produced by Ben Talla, Acharacle.

Aberdeen and Northern Marts’ sale of 3118 prime and store lambs, saw 510 prime lambs sell to 153.8p per kg for 39kg continental lambs, from Ackergill Mains, Ackergill, and £74.50 for 52.5kg Suffolk lambs and 61kg Texels, from Old Stirkoke, Wick.

Ewe lambs (254) averaged £56.54, selling to £160 for Cheviots from Nybster, Auckengill, whilst Cheviot wedder lambs (264) levelled at £47.07, peaking at £57.50 from Hoy Farm, Halkirk.

Store lambs (2090) cashed in at £56.72 having sold to £71.50 for Texels, from Curlew, Mybster.

Stirling (Cale)

Averages improved by £1.85 per head on the year to level at £38.53 at a Blackface Sheep Breeders’ Association show and sale of 4206 store lambs at Caledonian Marts’ Stirling.

Champion, selected by judge John Cameron, Balbuthie, was a pen of 50plus lambs from the Roseberry Estate Partnership, Leithenwater, which went on to sell for £53 per head.

The reserve the second prize pen of 50+ lambs from Aberuchill Estates, realised £50.

Outwith the Blackface lambs, top price was £64 paid for a pen of Texel cross lambs from DJ Watson, Ardnacross.

Mule ewe lambs (100) sold to £66 from W Adam and Son, Shankhead, with the 136 feeding ewes peaking at £50 for a Texel from N McNaughton, Duallin.

By the end of the day, Mules averaged £53.35 (-£0.54), Suffolk crosses at £59.41 (-£3.07), Texel crosses levelled at £57.84 (-£1.97), Beltex crosses cashed in £64.64 (-£1.34), Cheviots reached £44.88 (-£4.92) and Blackfaces at £38.54 (-£3.36).

At Borderway Mart, Carlisle, on Monday, Harrison and Hetherington’s weekly sale of store lambs was topped by a pen of Texel lambs, from Messrs Norman, Kirkhouse Farm, Cockermouth, which sold at £67.50 per head.

A pen of Mules from Messrs Story, Stoneknowe, Newcastleton, realised £55.

Suffolks hit a top of £62 per head from Messrs McVittie, Holm Cottage, Langholm and Beltex sold to £61 for a pen of 12, from Messrs Todd, Southernby Hall, Wigton.

Oban

Overall averages were down £5.70 per head on the corresponding year at United Auctions’ annual show and sale of 3785 Blackface wedder lambs, cross bred lambs and feeding sheep, at Oban, for an extra 692 head sold.

The show of pens of 20+ Blackface wedder lambs was judged by Craig Malone, Pitcairn Farm, Cardenden, who awarded his champion pen to Achalic Farm, which later sold for £54.50 per head to the judge. Reserve went to Turnault, releasing £48.50 to J Gilvear and Sons, Stirling.

Blackface lambs cashed in at £33.23 (-£3.28) per head on the year.

Lockerbie

The annual show and sale of Hill Cheviot wedder lambs conducted by Harrison and Hetherington at Lockerbie saw the champion award presented to a pen from Messrs Menzies, Chanlockfoot, which later sold for £56 per head.

Top sale price however was £63 paid for a pen of Beltex lambs, from Mr Mandell, Victoria House.

Longtown

More than 6700 store lambs and ewes were forward for C and D Auction Mart's weekly sale at Longtown on Tuesday, where a large company of buyers was forward.

Despite a larger show and quality not up to the previous week’s standard, trade was buoyant from start to finish and easily upheld with a number of new buyers forward from the south of England.

The sale also witnessed the first sale of the season for hill Cheviots and Blackfaces, where a good selection was forward in both sections.

Trade was substantially dearer on the year.
