A new centre record price of 8200gns was achieved at the Border and Lakeland Holstein club autumn bull show and sale at Carlisle, on Monday, when the pre-sale champion from the Annandale herd sold for 8200gns.
Judge Wilson Patton of the Ards Holstein herd in Northern Ireland, found his champion in the Armour family's Annandale Neste, from The Milton Farm, Moffat. A son of Mountfield SSI DCY Mogul, this 15-month-old is bred from the Ex90 Aintree Iota Nugget B ET that boasts four lactations in excess of 13,000litres. He goes back to the Ex92-4E SP LP80 20* cow, Aintree Victor Nugget Red and sold up to Nairn with C Innes and Sons, who bought five of the lead priced bulls for their dairy unit at Drumduan.
The family also bought the next two highest priced bulls at 4500gns and 4000gns. Dearest was Wormanby Flex, a 13-month-old bull from Wormanby Farms and Richard Hodgson, Burgh By Sands, Carlisle. This youngster by De-Su-Fedex, is out of the VG89 (3yr) SP cow, Stowbeck At Flow ET, that boasts five Ex-classified cows behind her to include the Ex94-2E SP LP100 cow, Berryholme Posh Flo and teh Ex96-2E SP EC RS 25* Cardsland Eclipse Flo.
Heading up to Drumduan at 4000gns was Evening Holsteins' 18-month-old Evening Ashton ET, from Evening Hill, Thursby. Another backed by the best of bloodlines, this entry is bred from a flush from the Ex93 SP top show cow, Riverdane Ashlyns Gold ET which boasts four Ex-classified cows behind her, and sired by Walnutlawn Slater.
Later, Messrs Innes forked out another 3700gns for Bridgedale Lancelot, an 11-month-old bull by Walnutlawn Sidekick, consigned by JD Greenop, Bridge Bank, Wigton. He is out of the Ex92-3 LP60 cow, Bowberhill Shottle Lana.
Kevin Wilson's Warnelview herd from Wood Farm, Thursby, enjoyed a flying trade with bulls at 3900gns, 3800gns and 3700gns twice. The former, Warnelview Burgh, a 13-month-old son of REW Seaver, is bred from four generations of Ex-classified cows, with the dam being the Ex90 SP LP60 cow, Warnelview Knowledge Bunty. Burgh sold in a two-way split to Messrs Adams, Kirkcolm, Stranraer and Messrs Neill, Ervie, Stranraer.
Selling at 3800gns was Warnelview External, a 15-month-old son of Croteau Lesperron Unix, out of the Ex90 SP cow, Warnelview Musketeer Enid. He headed home with Messrs Nixon, Workington, Cumbria.
The same home sold their reserve champion, Warnelview Spruce, for 3700gns to Messrs Forsyth, Maybole, Ayrshire. This 15-month-old is also by REW Seaver and bred from five generations of Ex dams being out of Warnelview Profit Susette Ex90 SP.
Matching that price was Warnelview Exeter, a yearling by DG Calando, again bred from a string of Ex classified cows. He goes back to the Ex94-7E SP LP120 cow, Crewilpool Enid 28 and sold to Messrs Hamilton and Son, Strathaven.
Top price for Andrew Carter's Gerrard herd from Wigton, was 3400gns paid for Gerrard Jonjo, a 13-month-old son of Wa-Del Outfitter, bred from Arnot Carlina 271 ET GP83 which is a daughter of the Ex90-2E SP cow, Arnot Carlina 195. The buyers were Messrs Williams and Sons, Mold, Clwyd.
Top price amongst the British Friesians was 3200gns paid by J and M Telfer, Bridge of Weir, Renfrewshire, for I and GM Blamire's Whinnow Weatherman ET, from Wigton. Bred from a long line of high production cows with his dam producing more than 11,000kgs as a six-year-old, this yearling bull by Trumpet Topman is out of Lakemead Wendy 34 BFE94-4E SP LP50.
Outwith the sale leaders, trade was disappointing for many with only 70% of the bulls forward able to find new homes.
