Prices peaked at £5000 for a nine-month-old Limousin cross heifer from Haas Side Farms, Lockerbie, at a show and sale of 825 suckled calves at Carlisle, on Saturday.

The heifer, which stood third in her class at the pre-sale show, is by Sarkley Mercury and out of the Charolais cross show heifer, Goldrush. She sold to Aberdeenshire showman, Blair Dufton, Huntly,

Judge, Paul Barwood, Great Yarmouth, found his champion in the first prize Limousin heifer from T Laird and Son, Carbello and Sunnyside Farms, Cumnock. This 10-month-old entry is a Kinniside Mobydick daughter out of a home-bred British Blue cross dam and went on to sell at £2200 to McNeil Estates, Shennington Estate, Newton Stewart.

The reserve champion also came from the same class, in the second prize heifer, a Netherhall Jackpot daughter out of a three-quarter-bred Limousin dam from LH Lomas and Son, Manor House, Middlewich. She made £1700 selling to B and T Kitson, Hutton Rudby.

A Galloway steer from E Telfer and Sons, Newton High House, Stocksfield, topped the bullocks at £1550 selling to Low Middelton Livestock, Belford.

Despite the limitations in the finishing trade, all classes of stock were well bid for with the overall average of £936.36 down just £53 on the year.
