The annual show and sale of North Country Cheviot wedder lambs staged the same day saw more than 2000 forward, with the first prize presented to a pen from Carcant which later achieved £59. They averaged £53.80

The1271 Blackface ewes averaged £48.40 (+£11.18 on the year), having peaked at£64, from W Adam and Son, Shankhead, while 332 Blackface gimmers levelled at £70.80 (+£7.30), selling to £96 from J L’Etang, Easter Greenrigg.

Hexham

Texel shearlings topped the trade at £2200 twice at Hexham and Northern Marts' multi-breed show and sale of rams.

First to hit that price was the breed champion selected by James Latimer, Chapel House, Gilsland, who found his winner in a ram from Richard and Chris Thornton, Cornhills. He is by Toftcombs Victor and sold to Messrs Dent, Naby View, Barnard Castle.

Also making £2200 was a Texel shearling from Lands Farm

The reserve Texel, a shearling from Kevin Young, Harbottle Grange, realised £1200 to the judge.

Other continental-bred rams peaked at £1100 for a Dutch Texel from WR Sparke and Son, Little Swinburne, while Suffolks sold to £1380 from J Leiper and Sons, Black Heddon.

Gimmers (1124) hit a top of £140 for Texel crosses from Northfield, Wick, while store lambs (364) reached £62 for Texels from Mayfield, Thurso.

Rams and wedders (50) sold to £80 for a Cheviot ram from Heatherlea Croft, Ardgay.

*The firm's sale of 619 lambs, on behalf of Lewis Livestock Producers, peaked at £55 for Suffolk crosses from 7A Ardbrock, Ness.

* A Bluefaced Leicester shearling from Nether Aucharney, Forgue, topped the firm's show and sale of 340 rams and females, selling for £180.

Second top price was £1200 paid for a Texel shearling from Moray First Texels, Forres, while Suffolks sold to £1050 for a shearling from JH Fowlie, North Essie, Strichen, who also produced the reserve overall champion that made £950.

The supreme, a Texel shearling from Lower Reiss Farms, Wick, made £750.

Champion North Country Cheviot was a park-type entry from J MacKay, Biggins, that later realised £850.

The sale of 1300 breeding sheep of all classes was topped at £132 per head by a pen of Mule gimmers from G Gardner, Lupus, whilst Texel gimmers sold to £130 from Ingraston.

Averages were significantly up on the year in most sections at United Auctions' sale of 7008 breeding sheep where a pen of three Blackface gimmers from High Staward topped the trade at £980 per head.

Warranted Blackface gimmers rose £16.83 to level at £100.72 with warranted Blackface ewes selling to £270 from Tay and Torridon Estates to average £59.90, up £13.50.

Cross gimmers sold to £142 for Mules from Achalic and averaged £96.19 (+£8.71) and Swale cross Blackface gimmers sold to £98 from Orchilmore to balance out at £88.72 (+£19.09).

Cross ewes sold to £82 for Lleyn crosses from Steall, Fort Willian to level at £64.07 (-£0.73) and cross ewe lambs peaked at £90 for Mules from Ashburn Cottage, Ardeonaigto average £66.36 (+ £5.79).

Blackface ewe lambs reached £78 from Crammie and levelled at £41.14 (- £4.68).

Texel gimmers from S Norman, Little Orton, topped Harrison and Hetherington's small sale of breeding sheep at Carlisle selling at £162 per head, while ewes of the same breed from JE Gargett, Wayside Cottages, Ainstable sold to £144 for a pen of five.

Middleton in Teesdale

Ewes peaked at £320 per head at Harrison and Hetherington's annual show and sale of Swaledale ewes and gimmers at Middleton-In-Teesdale, which attracted an entry of 3725 head and an overall average of £90, up£14 on the year.

The champion pen from CR Raine and Sons, Stanhope Gate, Barnard Castle, sold for £320 per head, with the reserve, ewes from JR and G Walton and Sons, Swarthmere selling for £265.

Outwith the show, ewes from F and MP Allinson, West Briscoe, realised £310.
