Judge Declan Foley, Capheaton, found his champion in a Limousin bullock from WD Wright and Son, Hunthills, at Harrison and Hetherington's annual show and sale of calves.

The 12-month-old entry later sold for £980, while the reserve, another Limousin bullock from I and E Glendinning, Newfield, was knocked down at £935.

Outwith the show, trade peaked at £1165 for a Limousin heifer from Messrs Little, Red Hall.

Top price per kilo was 224.7p paid for a pen of Limousin heifers from Messrs McBryde, Lochbank Farm, with the sale averaging 211ppk throughout.

Senior champion was a 555kg Charolais cross bullock from K and J Grant, 2 Lochend, Thurso, that realised £1160.

Bullocks (209) averaged 204.8p having sold to 240.2p per kg for a 410kg Limousin cross from Invercharron, Ardgay and £1190 for a 515kg Limousin cross from Croy Farm, Inverness.

A two-shear Herdwick ram that stood reserve champion at Harrison and Hetherington's annual show and sale of Swaledale and Herdwick rams, at Broughton, scooped the top price of 3800gns.

The tup, from David Thompson, Climb Stile, sold to the pre-sale judge, David Harrison, Brotherikeld, who also bought his choice of champion, a shearling consigned by Joe Weir, Chapel House, Borrowdale at 2000gns.

Herdwick rams averaged £474.68 with 12 rams selling at 1000gns and over.

Swaledales sold to £850 for the reserve champion from Messrs Hoggarth, Old Hall, purchased by Messrs Walton, Low Kinmont. They averaged £261.62.

A Beltex shearling from IA Wainwright, topped the breed at £950, while Beltex crosses were led by a shearling from Dalchirla Farms, selling at £1150 to Ian Reid, Isle Cottage.

Cheviots peaked at £600 for a shearling from G Milne, Kinaldy purchased by M/s Adam, Windyedge.

Beltex shearlings topped the averages league at £556.67, down £14.40 on the year with Suffolks at £465.15 (+£20.40); Lleyns at £378.03 (+£189.77); Bluefaced Leicesters, £420.00 (+£93.31); Texels £453.49 (-£52.29); Charollais £267.78 (+£34.09); crosses £411.37 (-£115.78) and Cheviots at £206.80.

Prices held up better than expected at United Auctions' annual show and sale of suckled calves at Oban where heifer calves improved by £17.70 per head to level at £490.72, while bullocks slipped £16 to £546.57.

Per kg bullocks cashed in at 202.5p, down 17.3p with heifers at 188.6p, down just 1.5p.

A heifer calf from Messrs Campbell, Achnacree Beag, was champion at the pre-sale show, with the first prize bullocks from D MacDonald, Tyree, scooping the reserve.

North of England Blackface ewes and gimmers both improved on the year at Hexham and Northern Marts' annual sale where gimmers topped the trade at £177 for the champion pen from the Robson family, Townshields.

Ewes improved by £18.70 per head, having sold to £84 per head for a pen of one-crop ewes from West Hills.

The champion pen from W Walton and Sons, Troughend, a pen of 21 six-year-olds, realised £82 to the judge, Andrew Murray, Stell Green.

Longtown

Prices peaked at £1050 at a show and sale of North Country Cheviot rams at C and D Auction Marts' Longtown centre staged alongside the Border Ewe sale.

Sale leader was the fourth prize shearling from Roderick Runciman, Allanshaws, a son of Humbleheugh Topgun, purchased by Messrs Beard, Dormansteads, Rowantown.

Allanshaws also topped the averages selling nine for £721.

Outwith the Allanshaws pen which sold another three at £1000, Broomhillbank, Lockerbie, sold at £900, while the champion from North Synton, realised £650.

The annual sale of traditional Bluefaced Leicesters saw 94 shearling rams average £332, having sold to £900 for a shearling from Alan McClymont, Kirkstead, purchased by M Ratcliffe, Fell Gate, with another from the same home making £750 to W Dunlop and Son, Commonside.

The Border Cheviot ewe sale peaked at £160 for North Country Cheviots from Orthwaite Hall.

Overall, North Country Cheviot ewes averaged £85.87, gimmers at £129.20 and ewe lambs at £89.23. South Country Cheviot ewes averaged £66.92, gimmers, £129.50 and ewe lambs at £63.94. Blackface ewes levelled at £54.92, gimmers at £110.31 and ewe lambs at £55.11. Swale ewes and gimmers cashed in at £58.23 and £65.71 respectively.

Thainstone

All classes of store cattle were sharper, with bullocks and heifers improving on the week at Aberdeen and Northern Marts' sale of 1001 store cattle which included West Highland calves, organic cattle and young calves and bulls.

Simmentals topped the 445 bullocks which averaged 194.2p (+5p) selling to 246.8p per kg for a pen of 308kg stots from Stranduff, Aboyne and £1260 for a pen of five 646kg cattle from Biffie, Old Deer.

Heifers (393) peaked at 228.9p for a 426kg Limousin cross from Briach, Rafford and £1220 for a pair of 634kg Charolais crosses from Muirton, Corse. to average 191.9p (+1.8p)

Charolais crosses topped the 67 West Highland bullocks which averaged 200.1p having sold to 244.9p per kg and £960 for four 294kg calves from 3 Drynoch, Carbost.

Heifers in the same section (44) peaked at 209.3p for four 172kg Limousin crosses from 5 Aird, Ardvasar and £770 for a pair of 394kg Charolais crosses from 3 Drynoch, Carbost, to average 184p per kg.

Hereford crosses from Upper Wheedlemont, Rhynie topped the small entry of 12 organic bullocks which averaged 181p, selling to 194.2p per kg and £1010 for a pair of 520kg calves from Upper Wheedlemont, Rhynie.

Bulls (7) sold to 213.6p per kg and £940 for a pen of eight 440kg Simmental crosses from Upper Tillenhilt, Midmar.

A large entry of quality store lambs and breeding sheep coupled with a good ringside of buyers ensured all types were keenly bid for at the mart's sale of 6497 ewe lambs, store lambs, island sheep and breeding sheep, staged the same day.

Islay

A Blackface ram from Robbie Brown, Newton Cottage, secured the championship and sold for £600 at United Auctions' annual show and sale on Islay which included a sale of 5133 store lambs and breeding sheep.

Reserve was a Texel ram lamb from Sheena Woodrow that made £450.

Top price was £650 paid for a Bluefaced Leicester from Coille.

Lambs averaged £54.56 per head or 147.2per kg, down £2.81 per head or 13p per kg on the same sale last year.

The judge, Blair Duffton found his champion in a the first prize heifer, a 220kg entry from AJ Corbett, 12 Lionel, that later sold for £900.

The reserve also topped the show and sale of 196 rams when a Blackface shearling from 5 Borrosdale, Lverburgh made £450.

Weaned bullocks (32) averaged 212.8p per kg having sold to 274.6p for a 244kg Limousin cross from 12 Lionel, Port of Ness, and £1000 for the reserve champion a 377kg Limousin cross from 100 cross Skigersta Road, Port of Ness.
