Castle Douglas

Wallets Marts, at Castle Douglas, staged their annual show and sale of 513 Spring-born suckled calves, where all calves met a lively demand, selling dearer on the year, with many bullocks selling up and around £3 per kg.

The pre-sale show judge was Rob Parrish, Hassendeenburn, who awarded the champion ticket to a Charolais cross bullock from R Jardine and Son, Upper Hardland, which later sold for £950 to J and A MacTaggart, Dunjop.

Reserve champion came from McNeill Est., Shennanton with a Limousin cross heifer which made £870, selling to Messrs Scott, Wigton. Topping the sale was the third prize Limousin heifer from Messrs Burgess, Maryfield which scaled 292kg and made £1040, selling to Hamish Hamilton, Derrie.

Outwith the show cattle, a pen of Charolais crosses toppd at £915 from Shennanton and 300.5p per kg for another pen of Charolais crosses from the same home.

Heifers sold to £870 for Limousin crosses off Shennanton and 273.4p for Limousins from Farhills.

The overall sale levelled out at £677.19 (+11 on the year), with bullocks averaging 234.5p per kg and heifers cashing in at 214.6p per kg.

United Auctions, at Stirling, held the sale of 1609 store, native bred cattle and young bulls, as well as 206 cast cows.

Bullocks (1035) averaged 186.55p to 221.40p per kg for a 429kg Charolais cross from West Flakefield, and to £1280 for a 750kg Aberdeen-Angus cross from Goddens.

B and W Bullocks (61) levelled out at 129.37p to 167.00p per kg for a 536kg BFX from Wester Mye, as well as £1040 for a 646kg MOX from Bandirran.

Heifers (477) balanced out at 180.63p to 227.80p per kg for a 417kg Limousin cross from Goddens, and peaking at £1160 for a 677kg AAX from Horselaw. Young Bulls (36) cashed in at 182.94p to 192.70p per kg for a Limousin cross from Drumcruilton, and to £895 for a Limousin cross from Drumcruilton.

Beef Cows (181) averaged 120.41p to 169.90p per kg for a BRBX from Monzie, reaching to £1390 for a BRBX from Monzie.

Dairy Cows (25) levelled at 90.81p to 127.90p per kg for a MOX from Claylands, and hitting £745 for a MOX from Claylands.

The annual show and sale of 653 weaned calves was held by Dingwall and Highland Marts, at Dingwall.

The show was judged by Sophie Watt, Cairntack, Balmedie who awarded the champion rosette to a six-month-old Limousin cross bullock from D MacLean, 4 Bualnaluib, Aultbea, scaling in at 260kg and realising £800 at the sale. Reserve champion was a 310kg, six-month-old Limousin cross bullock from Messrs Strathglass Farms, Cannich which cashed in £700.

Bullocks (387) averaged 222.3p (+2.3p on the year) and sold to 339.5p per kg for a 162kg Limousin cross from Messrs A and D Renwick, Keppoch Farm, Dundonnell and £1,005 twice for a pen of 415kg Limousin crosses from M Cameron, Strone Farm, Banavie and C Cameron, Corriebeg, Banavie.

A fantastic catalogued entry of 652 store cattle were present at Harrison and Hetherington's sale, as well as 175 weaned cattle and 333 calves, with all quality types remaining easy to sell, however leaner cattle proved harder to cash.

Topping the trade was a Limousin heifer selling to £1155 from Messrs JJ Studholme, Ash View, Wigton. Bullocks peaked at £1105 for a Charolais, from Messrs JJ Brough, Clappers Farm, Wigton.

Messrs Forster, Parkside Farm sold an Aberdeen Angus bullock for £775, whilst Messrs Norman, Little Orton Farm pen of Limousin bulls peaked at £790 twice and £780 twice, for six to eight-month-old bulls.

Longtown

C and D Auction Marts held their Great Annual Ram Fair, at Longtown, where a fantastic show of commercial rams were forward from a catalogued entry of 966.

Topping the sale at £1500 twice was Texel ram lambs from consigner Bryden Nicholson, Knock Farm, Duns, for unshown ram lambs, which were knocked down to Jimmy Sinclair, Crookston Farm, the same buyer who had previously bought the days Texel champion in the morning show, again from The Knock. The champion was sold at £1100.

Texel shearlings peaked at £1200 from Alistair Bell. The judge for the show was Harry Woodmass, Harene.

Cross bred and other continental rams met a good trade, with Beltex shearlings selling to £900 from C Currie, Inamay and cross bred rams peaking at £820 and £800 for Texel cross Beltex rams from G and CE Edminson, Middle Farm, who took the champion title with their Texel cross Beltex shearling. This class, alongside the Suffolk class, was judged by Nigel and Kirsty Peart, Weeds Farm.

A much larger show of Suffolks were forward, which saw a shearling top the breed sale at £800, from Hazel and Dennis Martindale, The Land, who sold another at £720. Securing champion was a ram lamb from Messrs Hewson, Burgh Head, which later sold for £350. Reserve was awarded to a shearling ram from WJ and JG Bell, Kinninghall, which was knocked down at£600.

The show and sale of 128 Bluefaced Leicester rams and ram lambs was judged by Stephen Ridley, Shitlington Hall who awarded the champion title to a shearling from Messrs Leach, Whintingstown, Roadhead.

A selection of top quality calves were forward at the sale of 958 suckled calves, held by United Auctions, at Dalmally, however, overall sale averages were down on the year.

Bullocks (569) averaged £609.15 (-£9.84) selling to a top price of £1030.00 for a 558kg BRBx from Dunans and 219.04p (-11.46p) to 284.1p for a 264kg LIMx from Dall Farm.

Heifers (389) cashed in at £547.16 (-£5.43) peaking at £935.00 for a 518kg LIMx from Dunans and 211.65p (-11.26p) to 272.3p for a 202kg SIMx from Auch Estate.

Champion was awarded to an Autumn-born heifer from Lephinkill, with reserve honours going to a Spring-born bullock, from Dall farm.

Kirkcambeck

The annual Kirkcambeck sale was held by C and D Auction Marts, where a large entry of 714 store cattle was forward, as well as the show for native bred and beef shorthorn store cattle, judged by Jim Holden.

The sale proved buoyant, with an excess of ringside buyers, resulting in overall sale averages increasing on the corresponding year by £60.

Topping the sale was Angus bullocks from Messrs E Taylor and Son, Wallish Walls, Consett, selling for £1030, followed by Blue-Grey bullocks making £1010 from Farney Shield and Holme Head.

2304 calves with excellent condition and heavier weights were forward at the Spring and Autumn calf sale, held by Craig Wilson Mart, at Newton Stewart.

Averages were up on the year, with calves cashing in at £791.51 (+ £32.91 on the year), with heifers peaking at £1280, £1240 and £1220 for home-bred Limousin crosses from Messrs G and J Hannah, Meoul, Stoneykirk, Stranraer. Spring-born heifer calves (345) sold to 405p for a pen of 10 Saler crosses from A Howatson, Risk Farm, Newton Stewart, and levelled out at £658.84, with Autumn-born heifer calves (660) balancing out at £798.59.

Bullocks topped at £1140 for a Limousin cross, again shown by G and J Hannah, Meoul Farm, whilst Spring-born bullocks (456) sold to 280p for Limousin crosses sold by S and J Cannon, Redbrae, Wigtown, which contributed to an average of £686.74.

Autumn-born bullock calves (843) cashed in at £907.27.

Quoybrae

Aberdeen and Northern Marts held the sale of 521 weaned calves, 125 store and 18 head of breeding cattle.

The pre-sale show was judged by Elaine Duguid, Burnside Farming, Banff, who awarded the champion rosette to a 442kg Charolais cross bullock from Anica Polson, Westerloch, Wick, which later sold for £1100 to W and J Cameron, Burnside of Edingight, Grange.

Reserve was a 390kg British Blue cross from D Kennedy, Tresdale, Canisbay and was knocked down at £960 to James Gunn, Whitefield, Reiss.

Weaned bullock calves (320) averaged 220.5p (-7.6p on the year) selling to 271.8p for a 309kg Charolais cross from Reisgill, Lybster and £975 for a 473kg Charolais cross also from Reisgill.

Weaned heifer calves (201) cashed in at 221.1p (-1.2p on the year) to 496.8p and topped at £1550 for a 312kg for a Limousin cross from Reisgill.

Bullocks (50) balanced out at 193.1p, selling to 238.7p for a pen of 491kg Limousin crosses from Reaster, Lyth, and peaked at £1110 for a 560kg Limousin cross from 8 Murrayfield, Castletown.

Heifers (75) levelled out at 191p and sold to 216.8p for a pen of 399kg Limousin crosses from Reaster and topped at £1090 twice, firstly for a 681kg Limousin cross, and for a 711kg Limousin cross, both from Westend, Newport.

Breeding cattle (18) peaked at £1700 for a Limousin cross cow with heifer calf at foot from D Dunnet, Linkmoor, Lower Warse.

Heifers sold to 213p for a Limousin from D Walker and Sons, Camreggan, Girvan and to £1040 for a Simmental from J and J Kay, Castlehill, Port Glasgow.

Black and Whites were sold to 173p from I McMaster, Knocknain, Wigtonshire and peaked at £790 for the same beast.

The pre-sale show was judged by Robin McDonald, Low Middleton, Belford, who found his champion in a Limousin cross bullock from Messrs Laird, Sunnyside/Carbello, Cumnock, which scaled 442kg and later sold for £1100 to the judge.

Reserve champion went to a Limousin cross heifer from R Orr, Lawhead, Tarbrax, which weighed in at 386kg and was knocked down at £1010.

Bullocks topped at £1160 for a British Blue from A and CS Comrie, Stonebyres Mains, and to 332.2p/kg for a Limousin from Allanton Farming, to cash in at 218.2p/kg. Heifers peaked at a price of £1010 twice, firstly for the reserve champion and then for a Limousin cross from Messrs Laird, Sunnyside/Carbello, and to 314.3p/kg for a British Blue from Jean Mackay, Harelaw, Barrhead, to balance out at 210.8p/kg.

Harrison and Hetherington, at Broughton Market, held the annual show and sale of suckled calves, where an array of excellent cattle were faced with a great trade and an overall average was down £3.37 on the year, which, considering the current prices, was respectable.

The pre-sale show was judged by Jimmy Rutter, Barnard Castle who award both the champion and reserve rosettes to RD Holland and Co, Low Scales, Millom. Champion was a six-month-old Charolais steer that later sold for £865. Reserve was another Charolais steer selling to £845.

Lockerbie

The show and sale of suckled calves, held by Harrison and Hetherington, at Lockerbie mart, saw a full ringside of buyers and trade for younger cattle being desirable, with bullocks averaging £758.79 and heifers cashing in at £698.31.

Securing the champion and reserve honours was D Brown and Co, Mosshead Farm, with a bullock taking the top prize, followed by a heifer.

Topping the day's sale at £1110 was a Limousin steer from R and S Kerr, Justenlees.

Next in the trade stakes was G and W Halliday, Crawthat, selling pens of Limousin steers to £1060 and £1010.

A pen of 5 from W and WJ Jardine, Newbigging, topped the Aberdeen Angus steers at £950, whilst a pen of 5 heifers sold at £850 and a pen of 4 at £830, both from Messrs Halliday.

Topping the pence per kilo was 250ppk for a pen of three Limousins, from WD Wright and Son, Hunthills.

Charolais bullocks peaked at 238ppk from J McTurk, Mackilston, whilst heifers topped at 246ppk for a pen of 7 and a pen of 6 from D and A Telfer, Cleuchfoot.
