Swedish Reds were behind most of the top priced lots at the dispersal of the Mounsey family's Prospect herd of Holstein Friesian and ProCross dairy cattle from Aspatria, which sold to a top of £2100 for a freshly calved cow in her second lactation.

The sale, staged at Borderway Mart, Carlisle, was topped by a cow by a leading Swedish Red sire and sold to Messrs Knowles from Preston.

Another by a Swedish Red sire, sold for £2050. This fresh heifer was knocked down to Messrs Beresford from near Kirby in Furness.

Neighbouring dairy farmers Messrs Brough from Langfauld near Wigton, purchased two milky cows for £2000 to include a Holstein Friesian cow in her second and a Swedish Red heifer that calved early October. He also went to £1900 for another second calver.

Volume buyers were Messrr Layton from Pargate Farm purchased 31 cows and heifers including a freshly calved Swedish Red heifer at £1850.

In-calf heifers due from December until June were topped at £1450 to average £1014 and bulling heifers peaked at £980 for another Swedish Red, to level at £680.

Another Swedish Red topped the heifer calves born in 2019 which included a large number only a few weeks old. They sold to £620 for a January-born entry while a Montbeliarde calf born in August realised £520.
