The 204 heifer calves peaked at £840 for three, 278kg Simmental crosses from Saulmore Farm to average £524.49 (£2.46) and to 328p/kg for two of the same from Scammadale Farm, to average 210.98p (n/c).

Lochmaddy

Bullocks secured both the champion and reserve honours at Dingwall and Highland Marts' sale of 314 weaned calves and store cattle at Lochmaddy, judged by K McKenzie.

He found his champion in a 470kg entry from H MacDonald, 1 Knockline, which later sold for £1000, while the reserve, the second prize bullock from E MacDonald, Old Inn, made the same money having passed the weighbridge at 455kg.

Knockline and Old Inn also produced the first and second prize heifers, which made £1040 and £840, respectively.

Overall, 189 bullocks sold to 235.1p per kg for a 370kg Limousin cross from 15 Tigharry, Lochmaddy and £1030 for a 560kg Simmental cross from 22 and 10 Balemore, Bayhead, to average 197.3p.

Heifers (125) averaged 192.3p having peaked at 263.3p and £1040 for the first prize entry, a 395kg Limousin cross from 1Knockline, Bayhead.

The six breeding cattle hit a top of £840 for a Limousin cross cow with a calf from 12 Sollas, Lochmadd and 30 OTM cattle sold to 112.7p per kg for an 825kg Aberdeen Angus cross from 3 Creagorry, Benbecula and £1020 for an 1075kg Shorthorn cross from 9 Clachan Sands, Lochmaddy.

Bullocks sold to 253.4p for 221kg Limousin crosses from Achnabourin, Strathnaver and £1130 for a 605kg Limousin cross from Dalchalm, Brora, to average 213.3p.

Topping the heifers at 228.1p was a 285kg Charolais cross from Bogburn, Duncanston, and £1000 for a 525kg Limousin cross from Migdale, Bonar Bridge, to level at 195.9p.

Bullocks topped the trade at 218.30p per kg for a 394kg Simmental cross from Gateside, and to £1155 for a 598kg Charolais cross from Shieldhill.

A 438kg Limousin cross topped the pence per kg section amongst the heifers at 216.90p from Upper Samieston, while 612kg Aberdeen-Angus cross from Arnmannoch made £1130.

All classes met a buoyant demand at Harrison and Hetherington's weekly sale of 837 store cattle comprising of 594 store cattle and un-entered store bulls and stirks and 243 calves.

Steers peaked at £1140 for Limousin crosses from Valmar Investments, Kirkhill Farm, Dalton.

Limousin crosses also topped the heifers at 263.5p from Balmadies, while a 556kg Simmental from Findron, Tomintoul, topped the gross trade at £1240.

Lawrie and Symington, had forward 289 store cattle and 305 suckled calves which included the show and sale of spring-born suckled calves.

Suckled stot calves peaked at £1100 for a 400kg Limousin from Newton of Logierait and to 341.4p for a 290 kg Limousin from Osborne Farms, Balmadies, to average 2.33p.

Heifers hit a top of £1080 for a 405 kg Limousin from Newton of Logierait and to 374.5p for a 275 kg Charolais from Laighwood, to level at 2.38p.

Store bullocks and heifers averaged 207p and 203p respectively and were topped by Limousin bullocks at £1210 and 278.6p from Lesley Wylie, Muirhouses and Newton of Logierait respectively.

Heifers sold to £1195 for a 560kg Limousin from W McLaren, Muirhouses, and to 289.5p for a 380kg Limousin from Newton of Logierait.

Lerwick

Some 2547 sheep of all classes, 80 head of head and 75 lots of machinery were sold through the Shetland Livestock Marketing Group in conjunction with Aberdeen and Northern Marts last weekend where store lambs improved on the week and cattle maintained their value from the high rates of the previous sale three weeks ago.

Store bullocks sold to £1110 for Limousin crosses and Luing crosses from Braewick, Eshaness, with heifers to £880 for a Lincoln Red cross from Tow, Cunningsburgh.

Weaned stot calves sold to £765 for Charolais crosses from Swarthoull, Wester Skeld and to 244p per kg for Charolais crosses from Haygreen, Cunningsburgh. Heifer calves hit a top of £665 for Charolais crosses from Swarthoull, Skeld and to 229.1p for Charolais crosses from Haygreen, Cunningsburgh.

According to the auctioneers, this sales' season has been the best in terms of throughput since 1996 and the steadiest in terms of prices since the start of September.

Quoybrae

A Highland bull topped Aberdeen and Northern Marts' sale at Caithness Livestock Centre, last weekend, selling for £1000.

The sale, which comprised 11 cattle, 97 sheep, four pigs, a goat and 21 cages of poultry, was topped by a bull from G Hooker, Upper Puldagon, Stirkoke, Wick.

Ewe lambs (33) sold to £180 for a Bluefaced Leicester from S Crowe, Hawkhill, Keiss and a Dorset from C Coghill, Knockdee, Halkirk.

Ewes (28) sold to £140 for Kerryhills from D Kimber, Westburn, Murkle while gimmers peaked at £160 for a Zwartbles from D Mccarthy, Longoe, Mey who also topped the males with a Zwartbles at £130.

Poultry hit a top of £40 twice for a trio of Partridge Wyandotte from C Farmer, Brachen, Corseback and for a pair of Crested Cream Legbars from J Richmond, Newlands, Brough.

On Monday, Wallets Marts sold 1230 store lambs, 69 OTM cattle and 72 store cattle at their fortnightly sale.

A small quality show of store cattle met a much dearer trade and sold to £1210 for Angus bullocks from T Robb, Trolane, or 269.6p per kg for more of the same from I and A Burgess, Maryfield.

Trolane also topped the heifers at £1130 with Maryfield again producing the lead price per kg at 208.6p. Bullocks averaged 197.1p and heifers at 177.3p

The 69 OTM cattle were topped at 132p per kg or £948.48 was a Simmental cross from Arbigland Farms, to average 101.5p per kg
