A steady trade was seen at Harrison and Hetherington's fortnightly sale of store cattle, where Aberdeen-Angus steers from Darlawhill led the way selling at £895 per head and 207.2p per kg.

Topping the heifers at £710 were more of the same from Fingland with Simmentals from Craighousesteads leading the pence per kg section at 154.8p.

Another strong show of calves was forward for Penrith and District Farmers' Mart fortnightly sale of 67 head which saw prices peak at £500 twice – firstly from Messrs Messenger, Howes, with a Limousin heifer and secondly from DW Mallinson, Lodge Farm, with a British Blue bull.

Some 400 store lambs were also forward, where Texels sold to £84 from JP Jackson, Scales Hall, Renwick, and a pen of 17 Mule lambs from GD Teasdale, Yew Tree made £67.

Carlisle

More than 1146 cattle were forward for Harrison and Hetherington's weekly sale comprising of 600 stores, bulls and stirks and 232 young calves.

Store cattle peaked at £1300 for a Limousin cross bullock from JD Bowman, Croft House, Penrith, while heifers sold to £1130 for British Blue crosses from Messrs Holliday, New Bampton, Wigton.

Limousins led the way among the 249 weaned cattle where trade hit £1060 for a bull calf from Messrs Watt, Field Garth.

A smaller show of calves was also forward where a top price of £420 was achieved for a Charolais from Messrs Todhunter, Greyrigg, Thornby, Wigton.

Once again there was a strong demand for store lambs with a top price of £89 achieved on two occasions. Firstly, for Beltex from H and T Wood, Well Head, Dean, Workington, and later for Texel cross lambs from from Messrs Eve, Stubbsgill.

Lochboisdale

United Auctions sold 305 store cattle and 32 cows at their sale where 186 bullocks averaged £727.23 (+£23.96) per head and 118 heifers levelled at £620.30 (+£38.05).

Simmental crosses topped the bullocks at £1100 twice for a 645kg beast from Balgarva and again for a 600kg entry from Stilligarry.

Heifers sold to £1200 and 293p per kg for a 410kg British Blue cross from Bualadubh.

Also forward were 592 sheep of all classes which met a buoyant demand selling to average £39.63 (+£3.57).

Suffolk crosses topped the lambs at £63 from Truimsgarry whilst more of the same topped the cast ewes at £71 for West Gerinish.

Top price went to a Limousin bullock from Plan selling for £1220 and 251.7p for Limousins from Lawhill whilst heifers peaked at £1125 and 225p for more of the same from Auchentibbert.

A steady trade was met for the 565 store lambs where trade peaked at £76 for a Mule from R Munro, Polnoon.

Some 733 bullocks averaged 197.28p having sold to 243.20p per kg for a 222kg Limousin cross from Lower Luthrie, and £1280 for a 660kg Charolais cross from Gillmill.

A 160kg Limousin cross also topped the heifers per kg at 250p for Gateside with a 602kg Charolais cross selling to £1155 for Haughhead. Heifers averaged 189.25p.

The 119 heifers peaked at 254.3p for a 175kg Luing from Kerrysdale, Gairloch, and £860 for a 475kg Shorthorn from Croft , Balmacara, to level at 186.6p.

Highland and Highland cross bullocks (26) sold to 234.0p from Glencassley, Lairg, and £700 from Balvraid Lodge, Tomatin whilst heifers (45) peaked at 260.9p and £600 from Woodlands, Daviot.

A strong trade for the 2251 store sheep saw lambs and ewes average £60.71 and £68.87 respectively.

A Suffolk tup topped the lambs at £90 for Culnaskeath, Evanton, whilst ewes peaked at £124 for a Texel cross from Brae, Dunvournie. Rams sold to £350 for a Texel from Tulloch Ard, Glenelg.

The firm's rare breeds sale comprised of 26 goats, four alpacas and 799 sheep and sold to £1600 for a Valais Blacknose from Drumfearn, Isleornsay whilst goats peaked at £380 for a Pygmy female with a kid from Allt A’Bhonich, Stromeferry.

Younger fresh calves peaked at £245 for Limousin bulls from Messrs Eilbeck, Plumbland, whilst heifers were topped at £235 for British Blues from JH and MJ Jefferson, High Pow.

Second calvers from Round Hill Farms led the way amongst the dairy cattle at £1800.

Also forward were 136 store lambs that met a steady trade, peaking at £89 for a Texel from Birchraig, Rayson.

Heifers peaked at £1175 for a Charolais cross from M Peat, Greenhill, Lesmahagow, and 210.1p for a Simmental cross from Messrs MacPherson, High Wexford, Symington, to average 193.2p.

Dairy bullocks sold to £945 for a Friesian from R McCaskie, Cornhill, Biggar, to level at 141.2p.

Some 1150 store lambs and feeding ewes were also forward which was topped at £76 for Suffolks from Messrs Smith, Carmacoup, with Texels to £73.50 from same home.

Blackface lambs sold to £67 from Messrs McCornick, Gair and feeding ewes reached £139 for Texels from Hartwood, with Blackies to £50 from West Revoch.

Aberdeen and Northern Marts' weekly sale attracted an entry of 615 store cattle, 26 young calves and 22 breeding cattle, where bullocks and heifers averaged 206.9p and 209.6p respectively.

Bullocks sold to 293.9p per kg for Limousin crosses from Balmadies, Forfar, and £1320 for a 692kg Charolais cross from Corse of Kinnoir, Huntly.

Six 284kg Limousin crosses from Balmadies topped the heifers at 264.1p whilst per head trade peaked at £1210 for a 622kg Simmental cross from Corse of Kinnoir.

Breeding cattle hit £1000 for in-calf cows from Cairntack, Belhelvie.

Some 3528 store lambs, Island sheep and breeding sheep were also, with breeding rams topping a £520 for a Texel shearling from Hilton of Culsh, New Deer.

Hexham

A steady trade was met for Hexham and Northern Marts' weekly store event which attracted an entry of 766 head and included the monthly sale of 238 native breeds and the second seasonal Bellingham sale of 231 spring-born suckled calves.

A strong entry of older continental cross-bred types peaked at £1300 for an 18-month-old black, Limousin cross bullock from Geoff Ogle, Blackburn, Slaley. Heifers sold to £1110 on two occasions – for a 16-month-old Limousin from Alec Bisset, Middle Dukesfield, Slaley, and a Charolais from Messrs Campbell, Thrunton, Alnwick.

A large number of cast sheep and buyers resulted in a sharper trade throughout with Texel and Texel cross ewes from T Common and Son, Low Ardley, selling at £128 and £120, respectively.

Suckled calves sold to £940 for a 365kg Limousin heifer from J Robertson, Newton of Logierait, and to 2.85p for a 330kg Limousin heifer from the same home, to average 2.20p.

Stots (25) peaked at £830 for a 385kg Romagnola cross from Meikle Coull, and to 2.47p for a pen of 275kg Charolais from The James Hutton Institute, Glensaugh, to level at 2.18p.

Simmentals and Limousins were in the money among the store cattle which saw bullocks and heifers average 2.05p and 2.06p respectively.

Bullocks (53) sold to £1200 for a 625kg Simmental from CMR Soutar, Peasiehill, and to 2.57p for a 395kg Limousin from J Roberston and Co, Newton of Logierait whilst heifers (37) peaked at £1145 for a 605kg Simmental from Peasiehill, and to 2.23p for Limousins from D and J Guthrie, Whitehills.

Young bulls (19) were topped at £640 for a 360kg British Blue from TM Strang and Co, Balcalk, and to 202p for Aberdeen-Angus from A Mylius and Partners of St Fort, to average 1.68p.

A Lleyn ram from Gallery HF topped the sheep at £110, whilst store lambs sold to £64 for a Blackface from Maryton Cott.
