Pedigree sheep from John Mauchlen's Spotsmains flock proved the star attraction at a joint sale of Suffolks at Carlisle, securing the top prices and the lead averages.

The sale of the mature portion from the Spotsmains flock and a reduction of the mature section of Alan and Lorna Jackson's Rugley flock from Alnwick, was topped at 1700gns and 1500gns for gimmers by Drinkstone Cracker from Mr Mauchlen's Kelso-based flock.

They are both out of home-bred ewes by Thrunton Eyecatcher and sold due to Rugley Special Reserve, to Northern Ireland breeder, James Alexander, Jalex, Randalstown, Co Antrim. Mr Alexander also forked out 800gns for a 2016-born ewe by Rugley Star Winner Collection, due to Special Reserve.

Glenkindie Blackface sheep breeder, Steven Smith, Haughton, bought the next two from Spotsmains at 1300gns and 830gns, both of which sold served to Special Reserve. The former, another gimmer by Drinkstone Cracker is bred from a ewe by Essie Eclipse, while the latter, was a 2016-born ewe by Rugley Star Winner Collection, out of a Essie Nero The Great daughter.

Mr Smith bought several of the top priced lots from the Rugley flock too, forking out 950gns and 850gns for ewes by the Strathisla Cappi son, Rugley Terrific. The first, sold due to Sitlow All Gold, with the second, served to Rugley Perfection.

Top price for the Jackson's Rugley flock was 1250gns paid for a gimmer by Midhope Sorrento, bred from the best ewe in the flock by Brackenhill First Choice. A triplet sister to the £1600 first prize shearling at Kelso this year, she sold due to Sitlow All Gold, to Messrs Jones, Commins Coch, Machynlleth, Powys, who also went to 1000gns for another Sorrento gimmer due to All Gold.

Next best at 950gns was a Rugley gimmer by Sorrento, due to Midhope Alfie, purchased by Messrs Patterson and Son, Capheaton, Newcastle Upon Tyne.

James Alexander, Jalex, also bought from the flock, giving 900gns for a 2016-born ewe by Rugley Revolution, due to Rugley Perfection.
