The pedigree Limousin sale year concluded with the Red Ladies Derby show and sale, at Carlisle, where EH Pennie and Son's Sarkley Odelisha dominated in the sale ring, going under the hammer for 20,000gns.

The August 2018-born home-bred heifer, from the Welsh-based Sarkley herd at Llandyssil, Powys is a daughter of Sarkley Jaguar and out of Sarkley Jilisha, both of which have a packed pedigree including Domino, Objat and Jockey genetics. This stylish heifer stood reserve overall champion at the pre-sale show under judge Annabel Mason of the Oddacres Herd, Skipton and was purchased by Messrs Corrie, Newtonards, Northern Ireland for their Drumhilla herd.

Second top price amongst the Red Ladies was 8500gns paid for Annanview Olala, consigned by Kevin Watret, Annan, Dumfriesshire. This April-2018 born heifer is by Kilcor Iceman – sire of the 14,000gns Grahams Mungo sold here in October 2017 – and is the first female to be sold out of her dam, the 12,000gns Tweeddale Harika. Forking out the money for her was Messrs Miller Farms, Midmar, Inverurie, Aberdeenshire.

AK and JK Smith's similarly aged heifer, Smithy Olympia, from Jacobstow, Bude, made 8000gns selling in a half share to Messrs Watson and Co, Berwick upon Tweed, Northumberland and Neil and Stuart Barclay, Insch, Aberdeenshire. She stood best calf at the South West Limousin Herd Competition last year and is a promising heifer for the 2020 show season. Sired by Plumtree Fantastic, she is out of the Dinmore Goldcrest-sired Smithy Lacey, which, last year, won six interbreed championships with her calf at foot.

Following in the trade stakes at 6800gns was the pre-sale show champion and best maiden heifer, Breconside Ora, from Peter and Merlin Dernie’s Breconside herd from Moffat. Also born in April 2018, she is a daughter of Netherhall Jackpot and out of the Wilodge Vantastic-sired Breconside Framble. Purchasing her in a half share was Turner Farms, Honley, Holmfirth, Yorkshire and Fieldson Limousins, Corringham, Gainsborough, Lincolnshire.

Next best at 6200gns was Grahams Orla, from Robert and Jean Graham's herd based at Airthrey Kerse, Bridge of Allan. Sired by Claragh Gustav – a full brother to the 24,000gns Claragh Franco – and out of the daughter of the German-bred polled bull Hinz, Grahams Jade. Brought out by Jennifer Hyslop, she headed home with Messrs Kent and Son, Mendham, Norfolk.

Andrew Burnett's Spittalton herd received 4400gns for Spittalton Oirene, a 14-month-old heifer by Dylans Irnbru – that goes back to Sympa – and out of Spittalton Irene. Forking out the money to buy her was Colin and Wendy Phillips for their Herefordshire-based suckler herd at The Batch, Sarnesfield, Weobley.

Just behind of 4000gns was the three-year-old Bridgedale Madam, by Wilodge Goldcard, out of Goldies Tessa, which is a full sister to the Paris Show Champion. Selling alongside her bull calf at foot, Bridgedale Peter, by Lodge Hamlet, she is back in-calf to the same service sire and was purchased by Messrs Evans and Co, Llangernyw, Abergele, Clwyd.

Stephen Nixon's 17-month-old heifer, Huntershall Osprey, made 3500gns selling to Messrs Hutchinson, Bowes, Barnard Castle, Co.Durham. She is a daughter of Rossignol and out of Allanfauld Jolene, which is regarded the best cow in the Huntershall herd.
