An improved trade on the month saw bullocks and heifers average 216p and 208p respectively at Caledonian Marts fortnightly sale of 348 store cattle, and 942 store sheep.

Limousins led the way among the bullocks at 276p from GS Stewart, Wester Whin, Falkirk and £1210 for more of the same breed from D and L Graham, Mains of Burnbank, Blairdrummond.

Heifers peaked at 234p for a pen of Limousins from ML Wilson, Baluskie, Barrhill and to £1140 for another batch of Limousins from A and J Orr, Hill O Harthill, Harthill.

Black and whites averaged 158p having sold to 170p twice from R Watson, Thorngreen, Kinrossie and A Black, Norrieston, Thornhill and to £780 again from A Black, Norrieston, Thornhill.

Also forward were 942 store hoggs, ewes and tups.

All classes of hoggs were the dearest trade of the season selling to a top of £95 for Texels from ML Wilson, Balluskie, to level at £70.10 for 926 head.

An Aberdeen-Angus bullock from Hillside led the way at C and D Auction Marts’ first sale of the year selling to £1145.

Messrs Grieve, The Lee, topped the trade at Harrison and Hetherington’s sale of store cattle with a Limousin cross bullock selling at £1060.

Topping the pence per kg section at 216p was another Limousin cross bullock this time from Messrs Blain, Coxydene. Overall, bullocks averaged 208.25p.

A strong trade was also met for the first feeding sheep sale of 2020 where Texels from Lower Greenhill led the way at £89.

Bullocks and heifers averaged 212.11p and 207.70p respectively.

A 260kg Limousin cross bullock sold to 275.0p for Doldy Farms, whilst a 620kg Aberdeen-Angus cross peaked at £1265 for a 620kg Angus cross from Starr.

Charolais crosses dominated the heifers topping both sections at 251.20p per kg from Kings Arms, and £1210 from Elmscleugh.

A Suffolk hogg topped the store and feeding sheep at £85 for Hartfield.

Lawrie and Symington had 152 store cattle forward for their sale on Tuesday where bullocks sold to £1280 for Aberdeen-Angus from W Stewart and Son, Newton of Inshewan, and to 244p for Limousins from CS Fleming and Son, Strone, to average 221.3p.

Heifers on the other hand levelled at 218.6p having sold to £1300 for a 665kg Simmental cross from the Firm of David Alexander, Dummiesholes, and to 242.9p for a 490kg Limousin from CS Fleming and Son, Strone.

A strong show of cattle was forward for at Aberdeen and Northern Marts’ weekly sale comprising 870 stores and 14 young calves where all classes were dearer on the week.

Bullocks (460) averaged 219.3p and sold to 259.9p per kg twice for a pen of 404kg Charolais and then for a pen of six 426kg Charolais from Tomnavoulin. Top per head was £1345 for a 674kg Limousin cross from Lower Cushieston, Meikle Wartle.

Heifers (354) levelled at 214.2p having peaked at 237.9p for a pair of 372kg Charolais crosses from Rogiehill, Skene, and £1340 for a 696kg Aberdeen-Angus cross from Stathorn, Pitcaple.

Old season lambs sold to £94 for Texel ewe hoggs from Shougle Birnie.
