Lawrie and Symington had 654 store cattle forward for their fortnightly sale, where Limousins were once again in demand.

Limousins topped both sections among the bullocks at 256p from Cumberhead, Lesmahagow, and to £1380 from Carmichael, to average 213.1p.

Heifers (272) levelled at 208.9p however, trade peaked at 258p for 237kg Aberdeen-Angus from Knevocklaw, Newmilns, and to £1215 for 578kg Limousins from Kirkton of Crawford, Abington.

Cronan’s Mules led the way among the store and breeding sheep, firstly selling to £134 for in-lamb ewes and then gimmers with twins peaked at £130.

Feeding ewes topped at £96 for Texels from Dun, Jeanfield, whilst store hoggs sold to £90 for Suffolks from Yeldabrek.

A rise in trade was witnessed at Mitchells Auction’s sale of store cattle, where trade peaked at £1225 for a British Blue steer from Messrs Cottam, Wardwarrow, Holmrook.

Heifers sold to £1195 for a Limousin from Messrs Robinson, Gateghyll.

In-lamb ewes remained strong trade, selling to £85 for Jacob ewes from WW Wise, Stone Barn, Wigton. A small entry of store lambs peaked at £83 for Texels from JB Stephenson, Punderland.

A strong trade was met at Craig Wilson’s sale of 541 store cattle, where bullocks and heifers levelled at £994.84 and £883.08 respectively.

Top price of the day at £1335 went to Limousin bullocks from North Waterland and 269.8p for Charolais bullocks from Bonnyton Moor.

Heifer trade peaked at £1320 for Limousins again from North Waterland and 237.5p for more of the same breed from Lawhill.

Suffolk led the way in the hoggs selling to £100 on two occasions, both from Eskechraggan.

Bullocks triumphed at United Auctions sale of 926 store cattle, native bred cattle and young bulls, 163 cast cow and 74 breeding cattle.

Bullocks (508) averaged 215.28p, topping at 275.10p for a 287kg Limousin cross from Drumbarn, and to £1300 for a 648kg Charolais cross from Pleanmill.

Limousin crosses topped both sections among the heifers (358) at 265.50p from Drumbarn and to £1275 from Elmscleugh, to level at 208.33p.

Also forward were 1178 store sheep which were topped at £83 for Suffolk from Coull.

Carlisle

Harrison and Hetherington had forward 865 head at their weekly sale comprising of 622 catalogued store cattle and un-entered store bulls and weanlings and 243 calves.

The sale topped at £1400 for a Limousin cross heifer from F and A Atkinson, Hawkrigg, Colby, Penrith, whilst bullocks peaked at £1235 for a Limousins from Messrs Todd, Longhurst, Brampton.

Trade among the weaned cattle sold to £1020 for Limousin cross bullocks from Messrs Dent, Beamwham. In the heifer section Messrs Wilson, Street Head, sold a Limousin for £990.

A smaller sale of 243 calves were also forward, but were in strong demand throughout. They topped at £515 for a British Blue bull from Messrs Wadsworth, Big Balcraig, Whauphill, Newton, Stewart.

Also forward were store and breeding sheep which saw Texel cross lambs from Messrs Stott, Hill Top, Caldbeck, top the sale at £99.

Following the store sheep was the dispersal sale from Messrs Howe, Cochrane Nurseries which had a very strong demand and the run of Texel cross and Cheviot Mules averaged just shy of £160. Topping the consignment was a pen of Texel cross ewes scanned to have two lambs selling for £185.

Charolais crosses triumphed among the heifers at 254.3p from Winless Mains, Wick and £1200 gross for Dunbeath Estate, Dunbeath.

Bulls (9) averaged 185.2p and sold to 207.9p for two 380kg Simmental crosses from Nether Kirkton, Barthol chapel, and to £1000 for a 548kg Limousin from Ternemny, Knock.

Grit ewes (296) topped the sheep trade at £152 for Texel ewes from Whiteinches, Pitcaple, whilst Island lambs (324) peaked at £124 for Beltex from Strathore, Balfour.

Hexham

The last sale of store cattle for the month of January at Hexham and Northern Marts’ saw 285 forward where all classes met a strong trade.

The sale was topped, at £1290 for a 20-month-old Limousin cross heifer from John Carr and John Junior, Camphill, Barrasford.

Aberdeen-Angus bullocks from Chris and Janet Watmore, Holystone Estate, peaked at £1245.

Among the store sheep, the trade remained strong, resulting in the average being £8 up on the week.

A pure Texel ewe from T Common and Son, Low Ardley, topped at £136.

Store hoggs sold to the highest rates this season, averaging £81.82 for all classes, on two occasions they sold to £110, firstly from Messrs Curry, Low Burradon, with Berrichon crosses and then J Green and Sons, Follions, for four Texel cross hoggs.
