More than 1300 cattle were forward for Harrison and Hetherington's weekly sale comprising store cattle, bulls and weanlings and calves.

A strong demand saw trade peak at £1360 for a Limousin cross bullock from Messrs Wigham, Coldshield, Haltwhistle.

Heifers sold to £1240 for more of the same from Messrs Fisher, Lairdlaugh, Castle Douglas. Young cattle sold to extreme rates with a 12-month-old Limousin heifer from Messrs Fell, Stanger Hill, Wigton, selling to £1190.

Weaned cattle were topped at £1140 for a Limousin bull from Messrs Thomlinson, Park View.

British Blue heifers from Lodges Farm sold for £1030, whilst steers peaked at £970 for Charolais from Cooper House.

Calves sold to £530 for a British Blue bull from Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown, Longtown.

A smaller entry of store hoggs was forward for Monday's sale, which peaked at £91 for Beltex from Messrs Bell, Holmewrangle, Armathwaite.

The annual consignment of in-lamb hoggs from Messrs Kidd, Briggle, peaked at £130 for Texel crosses.

United Auctions sold 1242 stores, native-bred cattle and young bulls and 133 cast cows, at their weekly sale, where bullocks and heifers levelled at 226.91p and 213.38p respectively.

A 198kg Aberdeen-Angus form Craigowmill topped the bullocks at 265.20p, whilst per head sold to £1345 for a 668kg Charolais cross from High Unthank.

Heifers peaked at 251.50p for a 318kg Charolais cross from Ardacheranmor, and to £1250 for a 640kg British Blue cross from Crofthead.

Limousin crosses from Ashfield led the way in the pence per kg section among the young bulls at 261.40p, and Simmental crosses from Gateside peaked at £1260, to average 205.93p.

Beef cows and bulls (115) levelled at 135.48p, selling to 182.80p for an Aberdeen-Angus cross from West Mains, and to £1390 for a Limousin cross from Airthrey Kerse.

Also forward were 1165 store sheep, where Baledmund topped both sections.

Texel cross gimmers in lamb to Beltex cross Texels from Baledmund led at £168, whilst their store hoggs peaked at £140 for a Beltex.

Limousin crosses were in demand, topping all sections at Dingwall and Highland Marts' sale of 91 store cattle.

Bullocks (44) averaged 216.6p and sold to 270.8p for a 240kg Limousin cross from Hougharry, Lochmaddy, and to £1040 for a 510kg Limousin cross from Tigharry, Lochmaddy.

Limousins from Tigharry, Lochmaddy, also topped the heifers per head twice at £940, whilst per kg peaked at 252.0p for a 250kg Limousin cross from Malaglate, Lochmaddy, to level at 209.0p.

Among the 173 store sheep consisting of 82 lambs, 61 ewes and 30 feeding sheep, trade peaked at £90 for Suffolk cross ewes from Liniclate, Benbecula, with ewes levelling at £58.80.

Lambs averaged £56.02 and sold to £74 for Suffolk crosses from Rhuban, Eriskay, whilst feeding sheep levelled at £46.37 and peaked at £80 for a Beltex cross ram from Hacklett, Benbecula.

It was a case of third time lucky for United Auctions' sale of 219 store cattle and 44 farrow and in-calf cows on Tiree, as it had been previously been cancelled twice due to the unfavourable weather conditions.

Bullocks sold to £1160 for a 582kg Hereford cross from A and AH MacPhail, Clachan, and to 253p for a 297kg Aberdeen-Angus cross from IC Brown, Barrapol to average 221.40p/kg (+3.26p/kg).

Both sections among the heifers were topped by AJ MacLean, Heylipol, firstly for two 557kg Aberdeen-Angus crosses selling for £1150, and pence per kg at 255p for 345kg Charolais crosses, to level at 212.11p/kg (+6.67p/kg).

On Monday Penrith and District Farmers’ Mart held their fortnightly sale of 235 store cattle, where all classes were £50 per head dearer on the fortnight.

Topping the trade in both the bullocks and heifers were entries from A and S Robley, Nelson Hill, with a top price of £1305 paid for a British Blue cross Hereford bullock, whilst Aberdeen-Angus' led the way among the heifers at £1175.

Dairy-bred Limousin bullocks sold to £1265 from S Allan and Sons Greenhow.

The sale of in-lamb breeding sheep met a strong trade from start to finish, selling to £200 for a pair of Hampshire gimmers, from AH Murray, Surron Court, Gretna, scanned with twins to a Dutch Spotted Texel.

A run of 303 commercial hoggs sold to an average of £122.50, which were topped at £136 twice from Messrs Brough, Seat Hill, Irthington.

Bullocks topped at £1235 for an Aberdeen-Angus from JR Kerr, Newbigging Mill, and to 286p for a Limousin from H Dunlop, Holehouse, to average 220.1p per kg.

Holehouse also topped both sections among the heifers, firstly for a British Blue peaking at £1220 and pence per kg sold to 263.7p for a Limousin, to level at 217.2p.

Feeding ewes topped the in-lamb ewes, feeding ewes and store hoggs at £142 for Texels from Drochil Castle.

Breeding sheep topped at £132 for Mule gimmers from Fountainside, whilst store hoggs peaked at £98.50 for Texel crosses from Millmoor.

The day’s top price of £1145 was paid for Limousin steers from Messrs Pitts, Stockbridge, Millom, whilst more of the same breed triumphed in the heifers at £1075 from RA Rawling, Overcroft, Greysouthen.

Store cow trade peaked at £1035 for a British Blue from Overcroft;

Bullocks and heifers averaged 228.8p and 221.93p respectively at United Auctions' sale of 177 store cattle, 24 breeding cattle and 264 sheep.

Bullocks topped the trade at £1070 for a 490kg Limousin cross from A McNair and Son, Stroneskar, and to 270.8p for a 240kg Charolais cross from Laggan Farms.

Limousin crosses from MacLeod, Lurignish, led the heifers at £860, whilst per head peaked at 254.90p for a 255kg Beef Shorthorn cross from I and R Malcolm, Poltalloch.

In-calf heifers sold to £1220 for a Simmental cross from F Ronald, Duntuim, and in-calf cows peaked at £880 from Balantyre.

In the sheep section, hoggs averaged £63.04 (+£23.54) and ewes levelled at £60.28 (+£36.60). Texel ewes from Fidden led the trade at £98, whilst Suffolk crosses led the way in the hoggs at £67 from Tiraghoil.

Dingwall

Dingwall and Highland Marts had 1893 sheep forward at their weekly sale where feeding ewes were in strong demand, however, it was a Texel ram from Dunearn, Nairn, that topped the trade at £138.

A price of £128 was achieved on two occasions, firstly for Texel cross ewes from Castlecraig Farms, Nigg, and secondly for an in-lamb Cheviot ewe from Coulags, Strathcarron. Lambs sold to £100 for a Blue Texel from Corbett Terrace, Uig.

The firm also held their show and sale of 19 Blackface females and Bluefaced Leicesters the same day.

Judge, JA MacCusbic, Totarder, Isle of Skye, awarded championship to the first prize in-lamb gimmer from Crackaig Blackies. A of a £6000 Auldhouseburn carrying a single lamb sired by an Auldhouseburn son of a £160,000 Elmscleugh, she realised £500 to R MacKenzie, Glebe of Deisher, Boat of Garten.

The reserve champion was the second prize in-lamb gimmer bred the same way also from Crackaig Blackies. She sold for the same price to Ben Alder Estate, Dalwhinnie.

The Bluefaced Leicester was topped by a ewe hogg from Midlock, Crawford, which realised £720 to R Baynes, Blackford, Croy.

Top prices were achieved for feeding ewes for the firms sale of 3092 store hoggs and feeding ewes and rams which sold to £124 for Suffolk ewes from Shaw Cottage,

The highest rates of the season were realised amongst the store hoggs which averaged £76.94, selling to £117 for Texels from Kirkwood Mains.

Charolais crosses triumphed in the bullocks (717) selling to 307p from Wellheads, Huntly, and to £1340 from Bogie Street, Huntly, to average 231.6p.

Heifers (466) levelled at 220.6p, where trade peaked at 269.5p for 282kg Simmental crosses

from Ballinluig, Grantown, and £1320 for 558kg Simmental crosses from Cairntack, Belhelvie.

Bulls (22) topped at 246p for 374kg Limousin crosses from Nether Kirkton, Barthol Chapel, and £1150 for a 656kg Aberdeen-Angus from Smiddy, Lyne of Skene, to level at 201.8p.

The firm also sold 1110 grit ewes and store lambs including island consignments.

Topping the sale at £1325 was a Limousin bullock from T Norman and Son, High House, whist heifers sold to £1165 for more of the same breed from Wheyrigg.

Black and White steers also said well with the top price at £1115 coming from I Grainger, Kiln Close.

Top price was £1320 for a British Blue heifer from Messrs Robb, Trolane, Dalry, and to 307.9p for Charolais cross bullocks from Messrs Davidson, Poldean, who also sold the top price pen of heifers at 274.3p.

Leading the bullocks per head was a Limousin cross fetching £1285 from Messrs Wilson, Kirkmabreck, Creetown.

Overall averages were 221.98p for the bullocks, with the heifers levelling at 213.79.

A small show of hoggs sold every bit as dear topping at £86 for Cheviot Mules from Murrayton Farms, Gatehouse.
