Despite growing concerns over Coronavirus, Harrison and Hetherington’s spring show and sale of continental cross calves at Borderway Mart, Carlisle, enjoyed a flying trade with top prices of £4200 and £3800.

In all, a bumper entry of 1007 head saw heifers average £1023 with steers at £1000.

Leading the way at £4200 was the reserve champion, a British Blue cross heifer from Perthshire show calf producers, John and Craig Robertson, Newton of Logierait, Pitlochry. Eheir 10-month-old black heifer is a daughter of Strathbogie Kansas and out of a Limousin cross British Blue dam. The father and son duo enjoyed a cracking trade selling 12 calves to average £1572.

Next at £3800 was the champion a Limousin cross from Malcolm Telfer and Helen Claxton, Morpeth, who sold nine to level at £1971. Their eight-month-old red steer by Lodge Hydro is bred from a pure British Blue cow.
